"I think Bromance is good name for a band. What do you think, Aubrey?"
Aubrey was snapped out of her waiting-for-the-bus haze then and there. "What?"
He dragged his long fingers across his face. "God, Aubrey, don't you listen to anything I say?"
Aubrey made a circle with the toe of her boot on the concrete. "Not really." She still couldn't believe she and Ashton were related, even if they only had the same mother.
Ashton was a year and four months older than Aubrey. Their mother had married Ashton's dad, had Ashton, divorced his ass, married Aubrey's dad, and had Aubrey. Ashton's dad wasn't very present in his life, so his stepfather (Aubrey's dad) basically took over the job of father.
People still didn't think they were related, even after sixteen or so years. They had different last names (Ashton's being Irwin, Aubrey's being a mix of dad's and mum's, Collins-Healan), different looks (Aubrey had a dark sheet of hair and was short, Ashton had sandy blond curls and was tall) and different sets of parents. It's same mother, different father, goddammit!
Ashton was the drummer in this dinky little band (that they were still trying to name after like, two years) with two other guys in his junior class, Michael Clifford (who Aubrey had a longstanding feud with), and Luke Hemmings (who was always very very sweet to her and offered to teach her guitar if she ever wished).
Their bus pulled up then, hailing exhaust fumes and a general feeling of euch as the pair stepped on. School wasn't really their thing.
Ashton went straight to the back with his friends, whilst Aubrey sat in the front with her best friend, Regina Davidson.
Regina was a theatre nerd of sorts, currently sporting a Wicked tee-shirt and fiddling with her green-painted nails. Reg had made her watch an illegally downloaded version of it last time they hung out. Aubrey had to admit, it was pretty rad. That Elphaba? Total badass.
"Hey," Aubrey plunked herself down, giving Regina a squeeze. "You okay?" She looked nauseated amd unsettled. "Audition time? That time of the month?"
Regina looked her square in the face. "The new kid got on today after I did, you know, the tall one who always wears shit like Ashton, carried a bass home that one day?" Regina whispered, a strand of black-coffee-colored hair slipping of her bun, she was talking so frantically.
Aubrey nodded.
"He asked where you were today, and I was like 'Well, she hasn't got on yet.' And he was like 'Oh, ask her over here when she gets here, okay?'.and I was like 'Only if it's okay with her.' Because badassness, so in short, you wanna sit with the new kid?"
Aubrey giggled. It was a sort of juvenile, cute way of getting her to sit with him, so sure, why not?
The new kid, who's name had slipped Aubrey's mind, sat three rows back, carrying his bass case and backpack. Aubrey tapped on his shoulder when she arrived there.
"Hey."
"Hey."
He smiled. Aubrey had only seen it a couple of times, so it made her smile. She sat in the empty space next to him.
"I'm Calum. Calum Hood."
