I was very quiet that night. I sat on my couch, cup of tea in hand, staring at nothing. Alastor was in the shower, washing the gasoline and stench of the trailer off. This was the first mission that had taken a toll on me. Even hitting my head when we chased Alan was nothing compared to how I was feeling now.
"(Y/N), is everything alright?" Alastor appeared in the doorway, a towel wrapped around his waist. He crossed the small space between us and sat down on the couch next to me. Wrapping his arms around me, he pulled me close to him.
"My dear, please tell me what is going on?" He asked, concerned. I set my cup down on the small coffee table and leaned back into his arms. However, I didn't answer.
"(Y/N)?" Alastor peered at me, seeming to proceed with caution, "My dear, how did you die?" I looked down into my lap, where I was nervously picking at the skin that ran along my thumb nail. That was the one question I was hoping he couldn't ask.
"I worked at this crappy little diner in Colorado." I said, taking a deep breath, "One night, while I was walking home, two men tried to mug me. One of them tried to...to rape me...I had a pocket knife on me...and I stabbed him. His friend shot me in the head, right here." I pointed a spot on the back of my head. Alastor stared at me, but I could not read the expression on his face.
"(Y/N)...." He said quietly, "I am so sorry."
"I wish I could have saved that little girl." I confessed, laying my head on his chest, "I was a grown woman, but she...she was just a child." Alastor pulled me tighter to him, not saying a word. We remained like that for a long while, silent.
Finally, he broke the quiet, "I wish I could have been there to save you that night..." I smiled softly, looking up at him.
"I suppose everything happens for a reason. Maybe I was sent to hell to get revenge for those who couldn't defend themselves." I said absentmindedly.
Alastor smiled back, "Like an avenging angel?"
"Something like that." I shrugged. Alastor tilted my head back up so I could look into his red gaze. There was something serious in them that I couldn't fully read.
"In that case," He said, "Heaven lost out on one hell of an angel."
