Nightmares of Beauty

Chapter 2

When I got back to the cafeteria, Rose was still there, and we had a brief conversation about what I would need for the next class, after she ran into me. It was apparently just freewriting, so I wrote a quick draft of what I remembered of a vampire legend before the teacher stopped paying attention and phones came out all across the classroom.

I noticed that Rose and Jaydn seemed to be communicating, then noticed the phone that Rose held. The teacher was asleep at her desk, so I leaned over just a little, enough to read the conversation. Jaydn wasn't alpha for nothing, and apparently she was cautious. In this case, she happened to be right.

With a grin, I checked Jaydn. Four gouges in the surface of her desk. Werewolves lost control sometimes . . . and this one seemed a little more unstable than normal. Then I realized that my own phone was vibrating, and I checked it under the table. Why in the world was Xavier calling me? He knew that I was on a mission. Quickly, I sent him a text.

Xav, I'm in class. What do you want?

Scott, I've got bad news. There was an attack. I think it was Jaydn's pack, but I'm not sure. Don't piss her off, it's not worth it.

Too late. She can smell me, that's probably why there was an attack. She wants me to back off and go home without causing a scene.

Good. Don't cause a scene. What's the situation with the target?

Rose? She doesn't have a clue that she's surrounded by werewolves and vampires. Jaydn and her are close. The rumors about her protectors are true.

Brother, don't get yourself killed. But everyone has always said that Jaydn's unstable. Push her a little, maybe make Rose see what she is, but don't betray yourself.

I frowned. I knew that my older brother was just looking out for me, but I didn't need help. There was the smallest click as I turned my phone off and put it back in my pocket.
