Nine years ago...

Sam climbed out of her fluffy unicorn bed. She slowly sneaked around the three other beds on her way to the creaky wooden door that led from this room to the kitchen. Once she reached the door, she placed her chubby seven-year-old hands on the doorknob.

    CREEEAAAKKKKKKK!!!!!!!

Sam flinched as the door made a loud noise. The opened door let a sliver of golden light snake its way into the dark bedroom.

"We have to lay low or else, they'll find us," A voice whispered from the kitchen.

Sam peered through the little crack to see her parents sitting around the kitchen counter, sipping a cup of tea, and whispering softly.

"But how are we..." Her dad, Leonard Galdur, whispered softly. So softly she couldn't make out the words.

"We need to.....or..... find us. It'll be bad for...if they found out that...." Her mom, Amanda, murmured.

"What about Sam? She might....about....and then we'll....for sure," Her dad mumbled.

"Don't worry, I gave... necklace that'll....for sure. She ....capable of .....by herself. She'll need to....in order to....and she'll never do that...she won't...can't...afford to lose...who knows," Her mom whispered. At the word necklace, Sam's' hand lifted unconsciously to the purple gem that was on a gold chain around her neck. Her mother had given her the necklace when she was so little, she couldn't imagine a time where it wasn't around her neck. It was the only thing she had that belonged to her and only her, not shared with her nineteen other siblings. The most special thing about it that Sam found quite strange, was that whenever someone performed magic within a five-mile radius, her necklace glowed as if it recognized the magic.

Sam was curious about what her parents were saying so she crept a little closer to the door. Unfortunately, the wooden floorboard underneath her creaked loudly. Sam ran back to her bed as quickly and quietly as her little feet could. She jumped into bed, threw the covers on, and slammed her eyes shut. She heard the door creak open and her heart pounded. After what seemed like an eternity later, the door creaked closed again. That. Was. Close. But why were her parents talking about her? Maybe they were talking about a surprise vacation! Yup, that's what it was. Sam settled down into her bed with a big smile on her face. Little did she know that behind her small life in the village of Borgaldra she had a bigger destiny to fulfill than she would ever know.
