holland's pov;

i walk into first period with parker and gen a couple minutes late, which is kind of early for me. me. taylor opened up his mouth to say something but i immediately shut him down by saying,"fuck off."

i hear the boys laugh and i look over to see jack missing. "writing you up for that." mr. taylor says simply but i don't respond, unfazed. i walk over to take my seat next to nate.

sammy tapped me on the shoulder. i turned around to look at him, "what?"

"are you still mad at us?" he whispers, nate and johnson taking interest in the question as well.

i shake my head, "no, jack cleared things up. he said that you guys really didn't know where he was because he didn't tell you. sorry for being a bitch." i apologize.

johnson gives a weird look to the other guys before responding slowly, "...yeah. we would have told you if we knew."

nate looked down at his hands and played with his fingers without saying another word or looking at me. i wanted to ask him what was up, but i decided not to do it in front of his friends.

"so are you and jack together yet?" sammy asks, wiggling his eyebrows. i roll my eyes but can't seem to bite back the smile. i looked down and my hands and shake my head no.

"what? why not?" johnson asks.

"haven't talked about it." i answer simply.

"he's such a pussy." sammy snickers. i raise my brows at him questioningly. "he's too scared to ask you out." he clarifies.

"doesn't sound like jack." i mumble.

"that's because he's not usually like this. not even for katie, but we all know that relationship was a shit show anyway." johnson mentioned.

"why did him and katie even get together? ...if their relationship didn't even matter?" i blurted, not meaning to.

"they were close friends before they did get together. one night i guess the sexual tension took over and they had sex." sammy explained.

"but they didn't have to date after that." i point out.

"yeah, true. honestly, i think they should've never dated. sure they cared about each other but... they could never love each other. they just weren't compatible."

"i think they got together because they just both liked each other's company and because they thought it would be less awkward if they dated." johnson chimed in. nate still sat looking down, not joining into the conversation at all, which is weird because i know he would have a lot to say about this.

"where is he anyway?" i ask, motioning to jacks empty seat.

"beats me." sam blows a raspberry.

"okay class, let's quiet down. i have now graded your projects. i have to say i am disappointed that i didn't receive them all." he mentions, looking in nate and i's direction. "but overall, the grades were very good."

;

when class was over, i run to catch up with nate. "hey! nathan, wait up!" i call out for him. i meet him by his side but he doesn't look in my directions, he just continues to look straight forward. i touch his bicep lightly trying to get his attention. "hey, what's wrong?" i ask. he doesn't answer verbally, just shakes his head. "seriously nate, you haven't said anything, what's up?"

"nothing, holland." he answered simply. i rolled my eyes and stepped in front of him to stop him from walking.

"look at me." i demand but he just looks down at his feet. "oh my god, what is wrong with you today? just fucking look at me." i groan, growing impatient. he finally meets my eyes.
