Never Ever

I looked out at the crowd from behind the curtain and I felt millions of butterflies flutter around in my stomach. There were so many people here, most of them all from my school. Why had I agreed to fill in for the opening act? Why did that band have to cancel last minute?

“Now, give it up for… Jessica!” the owner announces into the microphone, the crowd clapping like crazy as I walk out on to the stage.

“Hi there!” I begin, a smile on my face. “As you already know, I’m Jessica, and I’m going to be singing a couple of songs for you guys! So let’s get this party started, yeah?” The whole audience cheers, jumping up and down as Jennifer Lopez’s “Let’s Get Loud” starts. “Let’s get loud, let’s get loud! Turn the music up, let’s do it; c’mon people! Let’s get loud, let’s get loud! Turn the music up to hear that sound! Let’s get loud, let’s get loud! Ain’t nobody gotta tell ya, what ya gotta do…” I sing, jumping around and dancing on stage as people start to scream and cheer.

Once I finished that song, I sang “Wonderwall” by Oasis and “Fine By Me” by Andy Grammer, before finally singing my last song. I took a deep breath and summoned all of the courage within me before saying, “This last song goes out to my ex-boyfriend.” And before I could stop myself, I started singing Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”.

“I remember when we broke up the first time; saying, “This is it, I’ve had enough.” ‘Cause, like, we hadn’t seen each other in a month when you said you needed space, what? Then you come around again and say, “Baby, I miss you and I swear I’m gonna change. Trust me.” Remember how that lasted for a day? I say I hate you, we break up; you call me, I love you. Oh, we called it off again last night. But oh, this time, I’m telling you, I’m telling you. We are never ever, ever getting back together. We are never ever, ever getting back together. You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me; but we are never ever, ever, ever getting back together… Like, ever.”

“I’m really gonna miss you picking fights , and me falling for you, screaming that I’m right. And you would hide away and find your peace of mind with some indie record that’s much cooler than mine. Oh, you called me up again tonight. But oh, this time, I’m telling you, I’m telling you. We are never ever, ever getting back together. We are never ever, ever getting back together. You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me; but we are never ever, ever, ever getting back together… Oh… Oh… I used to think that we were forever, ever, and I used to say, “Never say never…””

I reverted back to my normal, talking voice for a brief moment, before starting up again. “Ugh, so he calls me up and he’s like “I still love you…” And I’m like- I’m just- I mean, this is exhausting, you know?  Like, we are never getting back together; like ever. We are never ever, ever getting back together. We are never ever, ever getting back together. You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me; but we are never ever, ever, ever getting back together… Oh… You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me; but we are never ever, ever, ever getting back together.”

I lowered the microphone from my lips and started taking in deep breaths, looking out across the audience with a wide smile as they went wild, cheering, clapping, and just acting crazy after my performance.  “Thank you!” I exclaim before walking off stage.

Suddenly, I was caught up in a whirlwind of compliments and smiles. Fortunately, I was able to get out, about to walk out through the back door when I felt a hand wrap around my wrist. I turn around and I see a boy with blue eyes, his striped shirt slightly wrinkled. “Hi,” he greets me, a breath-taking smile appearing on his face. “I’m Louis, and I would just like to say that you were fantastic up there.”

“Oh,” I reply, taken aback. “Thanks.”

“Would you like to go out for dinner some time?” he asks me nervously.

“Sure,” I answer, ripping off a piece of paper from a flyer behind me and scribbling my number on it with a pen I found in my purse. I hand it to him and say, “Are you sure you won’t lose this?”

“Never ever,” he promises. “See you around, Jessica.”
