I Want You Back

“I see you’ve been hanging out with that other girl in town looking like a pair of clowns, clowns, clowns. Remember all the things that you and I did first? And now you’re doing them with her! Remember all the things that you and I did first, you got me, got me like this. And now you’re taking her to every restaurant and everywhere we went, c’mon! And now you’re taking her to every restaurant, you got me, got me like this,” my friends and I sing as we drive down the highway. This song was pretty much my obsession. I had been listening to it non-stop for the past few weeks, since it pretty much described my life.

You see, I used to date Niall Horan, the Irish guy from One Direction when I lived in Ireland. I was only fifteen; him being 16. We had become the best of friends, resulting in him asking me out. I had said yes, but after a couple of months, I felt as if I needed someone better. So I broke up with him, and the next day, my parents told me we were moving to a small town in the state of New Jersey called Fair Lawn. And I never saw him again.

In Fair Lawn, I dated a couple of good-looking, sensitive guys, but they were merely nothing compared to Niall. But Niall was gone; Ireland was gone. I was in the States now. I couldn’t think of the past. But my mind just kept going back to Niall; every moment of free time I had, I would always think of him. His gorgeous blue eyes, his soft blonde hair, his deep voice. Everything reminded me about him. It was rather annoying.

When they became big in the States, I saw him everywhere. Literally, I would see pictures of him everywhere on the Internet and even a couple of ads or billboards when I was driving to New York City. The most recent gossip was that Niall had a new girl. She had curly blonde hair, fair skin, and green eyes. Julianna and Isabelle said that she even looked like me; that if we stood next to each other, we could be mistaken as either cousins or sisters. I didn’t see it. She had poor fashion taste, and was constantly bashing the fans.

What did Niall see in her? Why did he always take her out to eat, see movies, or whatever else he does with her? Why is he with her?

Mallery, you’re not with him anymore, so it doesn’t matter.

Well of course it matters. Just because he doesn’t love me anymore doesn’t mean I still don’t love him. After I had moved to New Jersey, I realized just how much I loved Niall James Horan. Everything about him, every little detail was pure perfection to me. But it pained me to see him. Because deep in his eyes, I could see the pain I had caused him all those years ago. It was hard to have friends who were Directioners, because eventually, you would become one too.

You see, Julianna, Isabelle, and I had pooled all of our saved money together, happy to see that we had enough to get tickets to their concert at the IZOD Center. That’s where we were heading now, with Isabelle driving her dark blue convertible Beetle.

“Please, this ain’t even jealousy. She ain’t got a thing on me, tryna rock them ugly jeans, jeans, jeans,” Isabelle sings, swaying her head side-to-side.

“Nice dance moves,” Julianna says to her with a snicker.

Isabelle turns around in her seat, glaring at Julianna through her aviator sunglasses. Good thing it was a red light… She looked so calm and collected. How did she do it? She was as much of a fangirl as I was, yet she wasn’t, well, fangirling. How she could not be freaking out is beyond me.

“Guys, we’re here!” I screech, clutching Julianna’s arm as I stare up at the IZOD Center. We had left pretty early, hoping to get some merchandise before it all sold out, even hoping we would see them and get to talk to them before the concert.

We all bought a tshirt, putting them on immediately. We walked through the arena, trying to spot them. “Look, there they are!” Isabelle whisper-yells, pointing at them.

Their backs were facing us, Niall making huge hand gestures as he talked. He must be nervous, since that was what he always does when he was nervous about something. We hang back a bit, waiting until they were all finished talking. When they were done, we run up to them, cameras and CDs in hand.

“Hi, I’m Isabelle,” Isabelle says to Liam, smiling confidently as she shakes his hand.

“Spanish Muffin,” Julianna says to Zayn, shaking his hand.

“Hi Niall,” I say shyly, looking down at the ground.

“Mallery, is that you?” Niall says incredulously.

“Yep, it’s me,” I reply, popping the ‘p’.

“Wow, I haven’t seen you in a long time!” he exclaims, pulling me into a hug.

“Yeah,” I reply, giving a shaky laugh. “So, uh, where’s your girlfriend? I would have thought she would be here, considering she’s from Jersey.”

“Girlfriend?” he repeats, confused.

“Yeah... Your girlfriend,” I trail off. “Melanie?”

“Melanie?” he asks. “Oh, I broke it off with her. She just wasn’t my type.”

“What is your type then?” I ask him.

“You should know, considering you being my best friend and all,” he replies with a wink.

“I-I…” I stutter. You just got friendzoned. I clear my throat, a blush coming to my cheeks.

“Mallery, just because we broke up and you left doesn’t mean we’re still not best friends,” he says to me, a serious look on his face.

“But my letters. My emails, my phone calls!” I exclaim. “You never answered any of them! Yet you still have the nerve to call me your best friend?!”

“I was going through some things,” Niall replies stonily. “You should know, considering it was your fault anyways.”

“Don’t you dare put the blame on me!” I scream in his face. But it was your fault…

“Oh, so you didn’t break my heart, claiming that I wasn’t good enough for you? You didn’t move off to some other country, barely making an effort to talk to me?! Are you saying that all of this never happened?!” he yells.

“Of course I’m not saying that!” I yell back. “Don’t you think I regret breaking things off with you?! Don’t you think I know that we could still be together, at this very moment, if I hadn’t been stupid?! You act as if you don’t know I love you!”

“Me?! You’re the one ignoring the fact that I’ve loved you ever since I first met you!”

“Wha-what?” I ask, out of breath from all of my yelling.

“Ever since I saw you, I knew you would be the one I would spend the rest of my life with,” he replies steadily, his face red.

We both stare at each other, our faces red and our breathing heavy. “Oh, just kiss already!” Isabelle screams at us.

And we do. “Niall, I want you back. Please, take me back,” I beg him after I pull away, breathless.

“As long as you take me back,” he replies, kissing me once more.
