“Tara, do you remember the day we became best friends?” Liam asks me as we both lie in our hospital beds, death slowly overcoming us. Liam and I had grown old together and we were dying together as well. I felt as if 95 was a good, healthy age to pass on.

“Of course, Liam,” I respond, a slow smile spreading across my face.

“Hi! I’m Liam!” a little boy with light brown hair exclaims as he runs up to me.

Back then, I was so very shy. So me being the shy little girl I was, I got scared and hid behind my mother. We had gotten new neighbors and my mom and I were visiting them for the first time to welcome them. My older sister said that boys had cooties, and I didn’t want to catch whatever that was.

“I’m Tara,” I whisper nervously.

“Do you like Toy Story?” he asks me, clutching his Buzz action figure.

“Yeah,” I say slowly, a small smile spreading across my face.

“Do you want to come watch it with me?” he asks excitedly, jumping up and down.

“Sure!” I exclaim as I get up from the floor.

He takes my hand and we run up to his room, both of us excited to watch our favorite movie. And from that day, we had been best friends ever since, doing almost everything with each other.

“And when I asked you to by my girlfriend?” he continues, a tear running down his cheek after remembering all of the happy memories we shared together.

“That was the most romantic thing ever,” I respond, clutching my heart as I remember the heartfelt moment.

“The stars look so beautiful tonight,” I say as I lay on my back, staring up at the starry sky.

“Not as beautiful as you,” I hear Liam mutter.

My eyes widen and I turn to look at him, shocked. His face mirrored mine, both of us looking away from each other in embarrassment.

“Well I guess I should get on with it since I pretty much already started,” he mumbles. He turns to look at me and says, “Tara, I’ve always liked you. I think ever since we first met, I knew you would be the girl I would end up with. I don’t know if you feel the same way, but I really hope you do. And that you would consider it after this.” He takes out his guitar and starts singing “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol.

“We’ll do it all; everything; on our own. We don’t need anything, or anyone. If I lay here, if I just lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world? I don’t quite know how to say how I feel. Those three words are said too much; they’re not enough. If I lay here, if I just lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world? Forget what we’re told before we get too old. Show me a garden that’s bursting into life. Let’s waste time chasing cars around our heads. I need your grace to remind me to find my own. If I lay here, if I just lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world? Forget what we’re told before we get too old. Show me a garden that’s bursting into life. All that I am; all the I ever was is here in your perfect eyes, they’re all I can see. I don’t know where; confused about how, as well. Just know that these things will never change for us at all. If I lay here, if I just lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world?”

“Of course I’ll go out with you Liam,” I say, smiling as I lean forward and kiss him.

“You had such a beautiful voice,” I say dreamily. “And you still do. Oh, but don’t forget our wedding day!”

“One of the best days of my life,” he agrees.

~*~*~*~

“You may now kiss the bride.”

Liam leans forward and kisses me, applause going up around us as David Archuleta’s “Forevermore” starts playing again.

“I love you,” he whispers.

“I love you too,” I reply, smiling.

Liam and I had pretty much spent our whole lives together. We had even been born on the same day! And now, we were dying on the same day. Of course we were scared. Who would watch over all of our family? Our children; grandchildren? Is there life after death? All of those kinds of questions were swirling through our minds.

But as the great Albus Dumbledore once said, “Death is but the next great adventure.”
