“Hello?” I say into my phone after hearing it ring. I was reading a book with the radio playing in the background when I heard it.

“Sarah, it’s Zayn,” he says on the other side.

“Oh, hi Zayn!” I say to him cheerily. “What’s up?”

“Have you heard from Liam?” he asks me.

“No, I haven’t seen him all day. I thought he was with you guys,” I respond worriedly.

“He called Niall earlier and he said that he didn’t deserve to be part of the band, so he kicked himself out. And then he hung up; but it sounded like he was crying. Sarah, we don’t know what to do!” Zayn exclaim, sounding on the verge of tears himself.

“Okay, okay,” I say, trying to calm him down. “I’ll go over to Liam’s flat and see what’s going on, okay?”

“Okay,” he agrees, taking deep breaths. “Call us once you know something.”

I hang up the phone and grab my car keys, rushing out the door and jumping into my car to get to Liam’s house. Trees and cars on the outside blur as I push down on the gas pedal, gaining speed and almost hitting the car in front of me. I park in the garage and run into the lobby, pushing the elevator button with more force than necessary. I run inside once the doors slide open, muttering, “Come on, come on,” as it slowly makes its way towards the 17th floor. I burst out of the elevator, the carpeting in the hallway muffling my footsteps as I run towards Liam’s flat.

“Liam, open up!” I yell, banging on the door. I turn the knob to find that it was already unlocked and I run inside. “Liam?” I exclaim, frantically searching for him.

“Go away, Sarah,” I hear him groan from his bedroom.

I walk in and see him lying on his bed, his face buried into his pillow as his laptop emits a soft glow in the room. I sigh. “Liam, what are you doing, it’s almost three o’ clock. Have you eaten at all today?” He doesn’t respond, just groans into his pillow and I sit down next to him. “Liam, just tell me what’s wrong.”

“They hate me Sarah,” he replies quietly, his voice muffled by his pillow.

“Who hates you?” I ask him.

“The fans. The boys. You. Everyone!” he exclaims, finally sitting up. He looks at me with sad eyes and I see dried tears tracks on his cheeks.

“Liam, how could you possibly think I, the boys, or the fans hate you?” I ask him incredulously. “We all love you.”

“Then how come they keep sending me that stuff?” Liam yells, his voice echoing throughout his room as he points at his laptop.

I run my hand through my hair and grab his computer off of his bed and look at the screen, reading through his mentions on Twitter; and what I see practically makes me want to throw up. Tons of people were sending him hate, saying that he didn’t deserve to be in the band, he didn’t deserve me, and he didn’t even deserve to live. “Liam,” I say, my throat closing up as tears come to my eyes. “Liam, you know that none of this is true.”

“But what if it is?” he retorts, his voice thick as tears come to his eyes. “What if you’re only with me because I’m Liam Payne from One Direction? What if I’m not good enough for the band, so then they kick me out? And then you break up with me because I would just be Liam Payne?”

“Liam, listen to me,” I say stubbornly, grabbing his face in my hands to make him look at me. “I don’t love Liam Payne from One Direction. I love Liam Payne, the boy with the puppy-dog eyes, the one that loves Disney movies, especially Toy Story, the one that is so caring and nice. I love you for you. And you know what? The boys love you too. One Direction wouldn’t be the same without you. So please, just ignore this and remember that we all love you. The fans, the boys, me; we all love you very much.”

Suddenly, he leans forward and kisses me, his tears falling on my cheeks. Soon enough, I’m not sure which one of us is crying, and I pull away, looking at him. His eyes were sparkling, as if they had found a new thing worth living for, and I smile gently. “Why don’t you call the boys? They’re worried sick about you.”

He nods his head and grabs his phone from the table next to him, dialing Niall’s number and putting it on speaker.

“Guys! Liam called me!” we hear Niall scream from the other line.

“Liam?” they all exclaim, and I hear what I think is them running towards Niall.

“Liam, are you okay?” Louis asks him worriedly.

“Is Sarah with you?” Zayn exclaims.

“Are you still alive?” Harry yells.

“Of course he’s still alive, ya dumb hoe,” I say into the phone, rolling my eyes at Harry’s ridiculous question. “What kind of question is that?”

“Boys, relax, I’m fine,” Liam reassures them, a huge smile on his face. “And I was wondering if you guys would let me back into the band.”

“Liam, we never let you out,” Lou says softly.

“See Liam?” I say to him, putting my hand on his shoulder. “I told you that they love you; that we all love you.”
