“Anna!” Elena, my best friend, whines as she grabs my hand and shakes it. “You have to go!”

“No, Elena, I don’t. It’s just a stupid dance,” I say as I roll my eyes and continue walking.

“Just a dance?!” she screeches. “Anna, this is our senior year! Yes, it may only be December, but you’ll regret not coming once we graduate, thinking about all the fun you missed out on.”

“Stop being so overdramatic, Elena,” I say to her in a motherly voice.

“I’m being realistic! Besides, maybe you’ll get lucky and be able to dance with Louis,” she says to me in a suggestive tone. “It’s not like he’d be able to know it was you anyways, considering that it’s a masquerade ball.”

“First of all, it’s not a ball, it’s a dance. Second of all, how will I know which one is him?” I retort.

“Details, details,” she grumbles as we continue walking. We stop in front of her house and quickly hug.

“Call me later so I can come over and help you out, okay?” she yells as she opens her front door and steps inside her house. I just nod my head and keep walking. When I reached my house, I wiped my shoes on the mat before placing them on the rack.

“I’m home!” I yell as I step into the living room. “Marie? Where’s dad?” I ask the woman sitting on the couch. Marie had gotten married to my dad a year ago; one year after mom had died. She disliked me and I hated her, so it was a mutual dislike.

“He’s still at work,” she replies as she paints her nails in a hideous shade of red. “Why?”

“Well…” I trail off, not knowing if I should ask her. “There’s this masquerade ball at my school today and I was wondering I could go…”

Marie jumps up from the couch. “Annalise, why didn’t you tell me sooner? We need to go shopping NOW!”

She drags me out the front door and into her car. She jabbers on about finding the perfect dress, shoes, and mask, and about how to do my hair and makeup. I take out my phone, texting Elena that Marie was taking me out shopping for the dance. I lean back in the chair and close my eyes, Marie’s talking fading as I slowly fall asleep.

“What about this one?” an employee asks me as she helps Marie and I look for a dress for the dance for me. We had already gotten a mask and I had a pair of silver heels at home, so all that was left was the dress. The worker holds up a teal dress with black and silver sequins and Marie and I gasp.

“It’s perfect,” we both say in awe. We immediately buy it and head home. I run upstairs and take a shower, Marie telling me to hurry up since the ball was at 6:30 and it was already 4:30. I thought that was enough time, but whatever. Once I dried my hair, I stepped out of the bathroom.

“Okay, go put your dress on,” Marie says, throwing the dress at me. I go back into the bathroom and change into the dress, admiring myself in the mirror. I step out once again, sitting in a chair so Marie could curl my hair. She puts in a silver flower pin in my hair, a gift from my mother. She puts the mask on once she was done so she knew what areas of my face she could put makeup on. She put a little blush and some lipgloss, but that was pretty much it. By the time I was putting my heels on, it was already 6:20 and Elena was waiting downstairs.

I walked downstairs, my eyes landing on my best friend. “Elena,” I whisper. “You look amazing.”

“Oh please,” she says as she rolls her eyes through her mask. “Speak for yourself, Annalise. Now, let’s go, the dance is in 10 minutes!”

We run outside the front door, purses in hand. “Have fun, girls! Annalise, make sure you’re home by 12:00, or else you’re grounded!” Marie yells from the front door as we get into Elena’s car.

“So they can afford all of THIS,” Elena says, gesturing at the elaborately decorated gym. “But not an air conditioner for the band room? They can afford a Smart Board for the band room, but not one air conditioner?! This is madness!”

“No, this is Sparta!” a random guy next to us says before calmly walking away.

Elena and I burst out laughing, before walking around to find a table. When I finally find one, I plop down, scanning the crowd to see if I could figure out who was who. A couple of fast songs played and Elena got up and joined the huge crowd on the dance floor. When the song “Kiss Me Slowly” by Parachute came on, I went to get some soda and sat down at my table, watching all of the couples slow dancing. A guy comes and stands in front of me, looking at me curiously. I look up at him and he smiles down at me. “May I have this dance with the most beautiful girl here?” he asks me, holding his hand out.

“Sure,” I say as I blush. He leads me on to the dance floor, placing his hands on my waist as I put mine on his shoulders. I look into his eyes, trying to figure out who this guy is. We dance to a couple more slow songs, and I glance at the clock behind him to see that it was 11:58. My eyes widen in surprise; it couldn’t be! “I have to go, I’m sorry,” I say to the guy as I run away.

“Wait!” he yells at me, but I was already gone. I feel something slip from my hair, but I was too worried about getting home on time to worry. I run to the table and grab mine and Elena’s stuff. I search for Elena frantically, finally finding her by the front door.

She sees me as I’m rushing towards her and she opens the door, both of us running towards her car. She starts the car and we speed towards my house, getting home at 12:01. I run inside, yelling, “I’m home!” because I know that dad and Marie usually don’t go to sleep until 12:15.

“Hey Ann,” my dad says from the kitchen. “How was the dance?”

“Pretty good. I’m going to bed. Good night,” I say to him as I go upstairs to my room. I change out of my dress, wiping off all of the makeup. I reach towards my hair, taking the clip out, but it wasn’t there. That’s what must have fallen out of my hair when I was leaving! That night, I went to bed sobbing because that was the last gift I had received from my mother.

On Monday during first period, the secretary in the office made an announcement, asking, “Whoever lost a silver flower clip at the dance last Friday, please come to the office during passing time.”

The bell rings and I hurry down to the office, happy that someone had found it. I walk in and tell the secretary that I had lost the clip during the dance and if I could please have it back.

“What’s your name?” a guy from behind me says. I turn around and I stop dead in my tracks. It was Louis Tomlinson, the most popular guy in school.

“A-annalise,” I stutter.

“Well Annalise,” he says to me, stepping closer. “I believe this is yours.” He holds out my clip. I reach out and I take it, our fingers brushing and I jolt of electricity coursing through me.

“Th-thanks,” I stutter again before walking out of the office.

“Wait!” Lou says and grabs my arm. “Do you want to go out with me sometime? Grab a coffee or something?”

“Are you asking me out?” I ask in shock, ignoring the feeling I get from him touching me.

“I guess I am,” he says with a shrug and a lazy smile. He steps forward and brushes his lips against mine. “I’ll be your Prince Charming if you’ll be my Cinderella,” he whispers as he looks into my eyes. I smile before touching our lips together again.
