"How does my hair look?" Momma J asks observing herself in the mirror as we stood in one of her bathrooms prepping her for the night.
"It looks great." I fluff some of her curls and comb some of them out so they would bounce. After a long morning of Sunday church service and a tiresome afternoon of cleaning and cooking, I was now preparing Momma J for the night she's been anticipating. I did her hair and makeup making sure she was on fleek; she was absolutely stunning. Tonight we would be meeting Lawrence for the first time and it was a really big deal for her. After about six outfit changes and over a dozen hair and makeup checks, she was finally ready for his arrival. "You look beautiful, he's going to be blown away." I compliment her as I grip her shoulders gently as I stand behind her smiling at her through the mirror.
Her face becomes flustered with anxiety as she holds her stomach. "I think I'm going to be sick..." Momma J says unexpectedly covering her mouth and heading towards the toilet. I rush to her side as she leans over the toilet trying not to gag.
"Momma, what's wrong?" I ask anxiously rubbing her back. She leans up and fans herself in a perturbed manner before turning to face me.
"This is going to be so bad, chile. I should have never set this up." She shakes her head with a tense look on her face. "You're right, I should've told him in advance. His reaction is making me anxious..." She says standing up straight to prevent herself from heaving.
I grip her shoulders shaking her up a bit so that she would snap out of this fretful moment. "Take a deep breath..." I rub her back to comfort her. "It's going to be fine no matter how it turns out."
"But Chris.. wh—what if... if he doesn't like him? What if something goes wrong? What if they don't get along?"
"Fuck what Chris has to think," I say straight up and maybe a little raucous than intended. "You told me you love this man so that means Chris has no choice but to accept this. And if he doesn't, oh fucking well. It's your happiness that matters right now!" Momma J looks on towards me in astonishment. I didn't mean to swear but the revelation that I've spoken aloud was one that very much needed to be said. "You're always so focused on what makes him happy, Momma but what makes you happy? Lawrence, he makes you elated. He brings out this side of you that makes you smile all day. I see it all over your face when you talk about him."
