David and Caroline attended the VMAs, walking the red carpet and sitting separately. It wasn't until after, at yet another party planned by MTV, they met up when David walked up next to Caroline and Sam on the corner of the dance floor, resting his arm on Caroline's shoulder.
"How's your night been so far?" He asked her.
"Pretty good, would be better if you stopped putting 100% of your weight on my shoulder"
David laughed, removing his arm. Sam smiled at Caroline before turning towards another group of people and starting a conversation with them.
"How classic" Caroline laughed.
"So I have an idea" David started, eyeing the door to exit the afterparty.
"What?"
"Do you trust me?"
"That's a really really bad question to ask me" Caroline joked.
"Jesus" David responded, putting his hand on his face. "Ok, will you trust me for the next..." He pretended to look at a watch that was not there. "3 or so hours?"
Caroline looked around at a party she was only at due to obligation.
"Fuck it, why not?"
"Cool" David smiled. "Come on"
Caroline followed David out of the venue space and out onto the street.
"Where are we going?" Caroline asked, struggling a bit to keep up with David, as she was wearing heels. "Back to the hotel to change, I hope? My feet aren't going to make it 3 hours"
"Fuck that" David said, looking up at the awning of a store before beginning to walk inside. "I'll be right back"
David returned a few moments later with a pair of knock off crocs.
"Are you fucking kidding me?"
"I am not fucking kidding you, unless you want to walk around in heels"
Caroline sighed and took her heels off, pulling the crocs (or fake crocs, croc-offs as David was calling them) onto her feet. David took the shoes from Caroline's hand and carried them, beginning to walk.
"So where are we going?" Caroline asked.
"First order of business is food" David said. "Snacks? At an after party? Were they serious?"
They walked for a few blocks, just talking, before walking by a dollar pizza place.
"This is it" Caroline said. "This is definitely it"
"Dollar pizza?" David asked, looking at the sign warily
"Are you trying to have a real night on the town or not? This is what New Yorkers do. Are our LA immune systems gonna be able to handle that, you may be asking? Well, it's a risk we're going to have to take."
David laughed as Caroline ordered pizza, bantering with the man working the counter as she ordered.
"Where did you come from? Not that we don't have the best pizza in town, it's just that you're awfully dressed up" He asked.
"Just left a lame party"
"Not a date?" The man raised his eyebrows as he slid the slices of pizza onto plates and into a bag.
Caroline turned around to David, who was on his phone. She knew he was listening, and decided to see how long until he cracked.
"Him?" Caroline asked in a fake disgusted tone.
The man laughed and Caroline turned to David, who had been staring at the same tweet.
"I mean you're outta his league" The man laughed. "My wife is out of my league, though. Don't mean it don't work out"
"So I should give him a shot?" Caroline asked, leaning onto the counter and looking at David.
David looked up from his phone.
"Yeah" The man laughed. "Give him a shot"
"Ok" Caroline smiled, taking the pizza as David and Caroline both went to hand the man his card.
"On the house. I hope it works out" The man winked.
David and Caroline walked out of the store, starting to eat their pizza.
"I can't believe you got us free pizza"
"No, David, we got us free pizza"
They stood against a wall, eating their pizza and eventually throwing the plates and bag into a nearby trash can.
"So we're on..." David craned his neck to look at a street sign. "35th and 7th. And I think, and judging by the lights over there, Times Square is on 42nd and 7th. I'll race you"
David took off in a sprint, leaving a shocked Caroline.
"Wait! That's not fair!" Caroline yelled, running after him.
"You're a runner you have an advantage!" David called back.
Caroline caught up to David relatively quickly, and the two sprinted through blocks, only stopping at crosswalks when there wasn't a walk sign. David quickly fell behind, holding his side and running at half the speed he was. Caroline reached the corner of 42nd and 7th and crossed her arms, looking at David who was now walking slowly towards her. She raised her eyebrows.
"I didn't realize" He panted. "You were that fast"
Caroline smiled and shrugged as David looked around at the bright lights around them. They sat next to each other on the steps in the middle of Times Square, both grateful for the warm late August weather.
"I would kill to make it here" David said.
"Times Square?" Caroline asked. "I think the magic would wear off quickly"
"No, New York"
"I bet you could do it"
"You think?"
Caroline smiled at David.
"Yeah"
The two were quiet for a moment before David finally spoke.
"Thanks for coming with me" David said, putting his arm loosely around Caroline.
"Is the night over?" Caroline asked, raising her eyebrows.
"No, I just figured i'd start thanking you now"
And with that, David leaned over and kissed Caroline again.
