I was throwing a ball back and forth with my best friend, Jason. He was going to leave for a week of baseball camp today. I hate that I can't go too. We rarely do anything apart. Mama says we're like conjoined twins without being conjoined. I sigh. "What's wrong?" "I hate that you're leaving." "It's a week. I'll be back in time for your birthday. He says tossing the ball back. I catch it one handedly. I dread asking him about this. I drop the ball and walk over. "Are we going to talk about what happened last week?" He looks worried instantly. "I.... I don't know what you're talking about." "Yes you do." I say, crossing my arms. "That weird floating thing!" He sighs. "I have no idea okay? I just want to forget about it." Just then the bus pulls up. He glanced at it. "Don't tell anyone about that." "Of course not." I say hugging him. "Hurry back." He smiles and picks up his bag. "I'll be back before ya know it." He waves and gets in the bus. I wish it wasn't this week. His birthday is in two days and I won't be able to celebrate it with him. Stupid baseball camp. I walk back inside. Mom was chopping something up for dinner. Dad was reading the newspaper. I opened the fridge to get a bottle of water when the door opens by itself! I hold back a scream. Neither of my parents saw it. I grab the handle, my hand shaking. First Jason's weird floating thing now this? What's going on?!
~Flashback~
Me and Jason were working on the treehouse we'd been trying to fix up for a few weeks. "We need to bring more nails next trip out here." Jason says setting down his hammer, winded and sweaty. "I'll add it to the supplies list." I say tossing him a can of lemonade. "Thanks." He says, standing up and tripping over a piece of wood. He falls out the open doorway to the ground below. I scream his name, desperate and scared when to my shock, he was floating a few centimeters off the ground. He stared at me confused then hit the ground with a hard oof. I quickly climbed down and ran over. "W-What just h-happened?" He stares at me freaked out and says, "I... I d-don't know."
~flashback over~
Jason's pov
I wave to my friends. "Three laps in twenty minutes." Coach announces. As if we don't already know. We've been doing the same thing for two years now. "Hey." A kid I've never seen before says jogging over to me. "You new?" I ask. "Yeah. Just transferred from Kentucky. Been going a while?" He asks. I laugh and nod. "Since little league when I was nine." I walked to my cabin, wishing I could be home. Especially in two days on my eleventh birthday.
