"I need to figure out how I am going to get Slughorn to tell me what the memory really was. How do you make friends with a teacher?" Harry asked, his frustration lines growing larger across his face.
Ron pulled away from Lavender for a moment, and looked at Harry, red lipped and stupid faced. "I dunno. You seem to be pretty good at it though. You're Harry Potter."
Harry fumed. "What is with your family and my name? It's more than just a name you know!"
But Ron was no longer paying attention, for Lavender was straddling Ron and visually appeared to be sucking his face off, and as they were in a library, Harry tried to concentrate on his book. It was very difficult because Lavender and Ron were disgustingly loud when snogging.
"Ron, hey Ron!" Harry said sharply.
"What?"
"Go someplace where Hermione won't be, she's always at the library."
"Harry, I don't care anymore. It's been weeks. If Hermione is still pissed about Lav and I, she can get over it." Ron spat, before he went back to being devoured by the most hands on girl he had ever seen in his short life.
"Alright, well I'm leaving. See you, Ron." Harry sighed, gathering his books, before standing up and walking out of the library.
On his way out, he saw Hermione start to make her way in. He quickly sped up to her.
"Hey," he said oddly, trying desperately to distract her.
"Are you okay? You left the common room really weird." Hermione said. Her eyes stayed trained on Harry's, which he was grateful for at this point.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Dumbledore is a really smart man, you know?"
"Sure. I mean, he is a bit on the older side, but I suppose he's a lot wiser than most." Hermione smiled. "I have to return some stuff, but I'd love to have lunch," she started to walk around Harry, but he moved in her way.
"Lunch? Perfect! Let's go to the Three Broomsticks and have a butterbeer!"
"Okay.. that's fine. I just need to go in the library," Hermione said slowly. "Excuse me,"
Hermione pushed her way through Harry and to Harry's dismay, came to face Lavender and Ron doing exactly what they do best. Only now, it seemed to be escalating further, as Ron's hands snaked to rather intimate areas and Lavender pushed her open chest into his body.Hermione cleared her throat, and surprisingly, walked away from the scene, and to the front desk, where she put the stack of books on the counter, and slowly turned and left. She looked fine. A little grossed out maybe, but she was not about to cry, and she was not quickly trying to leave. Harry watched her with a smile as she approached him.
"So, Three Broomsticks?" She said.
"I'd consider it an honor."
**
Harry and Hermione sat directly across from each other, but there was a lot of silence in the air. Harry was trying his best not to look at Hermione in a flirtatious way, so therefore he was avoiding eye contact with her all together. Hermione was taking small, individual slurps from her butterbeer, occasionally setting her glass down to glance around the room.
Harry tried his hardest to seem nonchalant when talking to her, but he did not understand his feelings towards Hermione, if there was any at all. He'd known her since he was eleven years old, and always considered her like a sister. However, ever since she had been experiencing hardship with Ron, his feelings towards her escalated into a more protective state.
"Are you okay?" Hermione asked seriously.
"Yes, Hermione. Can you please stop asking me that." Harry said tiredly.
"Only if you stop lying to me," Hermione scolded. "I've known you for years. You don't think I know when something is bothering you by now?" Her voice became a hushed whisper. "Is it Sirius?"
"No," Harry breathed angrily, his fingers clenching and his head becoming hot.
"Then what is it!" Hermione yelled, and simultaneously, the door bell jingled as a familiar couple walked through the door. Ginny, with Dean trailing at her side bursted in, with bubbly attitudes and bright, smiling faces. Hermione turned as the door opened and grimaced at the sight. She sympathetically turned back to Harry.
"Is it Ginny?"
No it wasn't. But Harry couldn't tell Hermione the real reason he was so distant and absent minded lately. "Yeah, it is."
"Why couldn't you just tell me that? I would have understood." She said softly.
"Because.. I just wanted you to feel like you could trust me with everything. I know things have been kind of hard with you and Ron, so I wanted to be that person that would listen to you. It's been nice. I listen to you all day, and I understand what goes through your head." Harry said, progressively dozing off after each word. He was doing it again. Only this time it was in his mind.
"Well I can listen too." Hermione snapped in a matter of fact tone.
"Oh, I'm sure. Will you listen to me when I say that you have a sugar creme mustache again?" Harry laughed loudly.
Hermione groaned and quickly grabbed her napkin and violently rubbed the sweets off of her face. "It's not funny, Harry." She said seriously, but it was only a matter of time before she was laughing too. Harry's eye caught Ginny's and in an instant, he was repulsed by her presence. At least Harry had someone who had been loyal to him for her entire life knowing him. It didn't take Harry long in life to notice that Ron and Hermione were the best additions to his life.
It appeared like he was trying to make Ginny jealous, but it was just the typical behavior for Harry and Hermione. He looked at Hermione and smiled, feeling pride that she was his best friend. At least, that's what he convinced himself that she was.
