Endless Overthinking

It was a normal day in Snowdin. Papyrus was out training with Undyne, Mettaton was filming more of his ridiculous yet humorous shows, Alphys was watching anime in her lab. A perfectly normal day. Except for Sans. For the sixth time the human child had reset, the fifth time the kid killed his brother. And all the helpless skeleton could do was just let it happen. He was sick of it. The endless dying, the endless restarting, the fake smiles, the secrets, everything! But what could he do? He was stuck in an endless loop of genocide runs, nothing can stop the kid, or even change their motives. Not even the great Papyrus.

Sans chuckled at his unnecessary thoughts. He didn't have time to reminisce about it. He just needed to distract himself from the painful swelling of rage inside him, even for just a second.

He decided to go to Grillby's, it was one of the only places he could find comfort in, the only time his dangerous thoughts left him alone.

Once the short skeleton arrived everyone greeted him with a warm heart, though Sans can't get the image of their terrified faces when they're at their last breath out of his head, but he hid it with a fake smile. He was good at that. Once he sat in his usual spot Grillby set a ketchup bottle on the counter.

Sans giggled, "you know me too well, Grillbz"

Grillby smiled back, but then saw Sans' smile falter as the fire elemental was about to turn to clean the cups.

"Sans, are you alright?" Grillby asked, a tint of worry lacing his voice.

The skeleton glanced up at Grillby, a soft blue blush covering his cheekbones as he quickly looked away. "Yeah, I'm ok."

The fire elemental didn't look convinced. "Sans, you may not realize it but I know when you're lying, I've known you for a long time. Please tell me the truth." He looked at Sans with uneasiness, and his face had a light shade of blue.

Sans was shocked that Grillby knew so much about him. And why is he blushing? Sans stared, trying to figure out why Grillby was so nervous, and why it looked so cute...

"U-uh, Sans..."

"Huh? Oh, sorry! I didn't mean to zone out, um..." Sans felt a soft warmth down his spine when Grillby giggled.

"It's alright, you don't have to tell me," Grillby said calmly, but then added more seriously, "but please know that I'm always here for you, Sans."

Sans just nodded, too nervous to speak, Grillby is so understanding, he didn't want to blurt out all his difficult problems at him and cause him distress. But Grillby really looks like he cares. And maybe telling someone is a good idea to keep the unnecessary stress away. At least, for now.

It's all going to reset anyway...

(Time Skip)

After the restaurant closed, Sans was in his seat, sleeping. There were some empty ketchup bottles next to him, and his face was covered with his arms on the counter. Grillby was about to take the ketchup bottles away until he heard tiny sobs coming from the small skeleton. He started panicking and rubbed Sans' back in circles as he tried to calm the skeleton as well as himself.

"Sans?" Grillby whispered quietly.

He then noticed that Sans was still sleeping when he moved the skeletons arm away from his face.

"S-Sans? Please wake up," Grillby started shaking his shoulder to get him to wake up, and just as he did Sans shot up in his seat, his eye flashing blue for a second.

"G-Grillby!?" Sans glanced around with wide eyes until they met Grillby, then he hugged him tightly, tears streaming down his face.

Grillby hugged him back and tried comforting him by saying, "it's okay, Sans, I'm here. Shhhh..." Sans' breathing seemed to slow, and he soon felt a lot better.

"Thanks, Grillby. S-sorry for worrying you." The small skeleton soon let go and smiled at Grillby, and right then, all of the fire monsters' fears blew away.

"I-it's alright, Sans, I just want you to be okay." Grillby replied, a warm blush covering his face again.

Sans admired Grillby's words. Actually, he admired everything about him. His warmth, his soft gestures, his sweet voice that made Sans' soul drop every time he spoke-

"S-Sans, you're staring again."

"O-oh! Sorry again, Grillby! I'm really not feeling myself today." Sans felt really embarrassed, "Well, I should be going home, I-I don't want to waste anymore of your time." And with that he teleported away, too anxious to spend another second with Grillby.

On the other hand, the fire elemental was hurt to see Sans leave. Well, I guess he has other things to do, and it is getting late. Grillby then cleaned up the bar and went to bed.

Sans POV

AAAH why did I do that!!!! I was freaking out. I can't fall for him, he's been my friend since forever! I tried to calm myself down by taking deep breaths. It wasn't working. In fact, it was doing the opposite. I felt like my soul was going to explode. I looked up from where I was standing and realized I teleported right in front of my house. Well, I hope it's just a small crush. I wouldn't be able to take it if the kid kept resetting. Starting over, and over, and over on a relationship. The thought gave me chills.

Okay, you're fine Sans, just go inside, you can spend some time with Papyrus. I took one last deep breath and opened the door. Warm air immediately washed over me as I stepped inside. And I was greeted with Papyrus's voice telling me off for coming home late again. Oh how I missed it.

"Sans! Why are you coming home at this time!? It's starting to worry me how late you're getting. You missed Mettaton's show!" Papyrus's eye sockets were filled with hurt. I hate seeing his face like that.

"I'm sorry, bro. I'll try to come back earlier next time," I replied.

"Okay... Good," Papyrus seemed to feel better. That's good.

He walked toward me and hugged me. And I hugged back. "Goodnight, brother," he whispered.

"Night, Paps." I let go and went up to my room, then let myself collapse onto my bed. I hope I can get over this, I thought. Maybe, just maybe... I'll be able to live a normal life without anyone dying or anyone resetting.

But I know that's probably never going to happen...
