"Hey, where have you been?" Heather asked as soon as Clara turned her key in the lock. She had barely got one foot through the door before Heather hounded on her.
"What do you mean?" Clara asked in mock confusion.
"Don't play dumb with me! You said you were 'going out to the shops' and come back three days later?" She exclaimed, exasperated, throwing her hands up in the air and moving down the hall so Clara could come inside. "Is this what I need to get used to? Living with an ex secret agent?"
"Not so much 'ex'" Clara explained, making the quotation marks with her fingers as she said the word 'ex'.
"No!" Heather blurted, quickly covering her open mouth with both hands. "You took the job?!" Heather shouted, over-enthusiastically.
"I did."
"You're a secret agent again?!" She shouted again.
"I am."
"Did you actually go to the shops?" She asked calmly, "Because we're out of milk."
"I took the job!" Clara proclaimed, "I'm a S.H.I.E.L.D agent again."
"I knew it." Heather said, high fiving herself, then looking around sheepishly to see if Clara had noticed. She hadn't. Clara was slumped on the couch, staring dead ahead in a sort of trance.
"I'm going to see him again, aren't I?"
"Yeah." Heather said softly, perching next to her on the arm of the couch. "You going to be okay with that? Need me to come with you and hold your hand?"
Clara lifted her head to raise an eyebrow at her and slumped back down. Clara felt for the TV remote and turned it on, settling into the couch to enjoy one more evening of normality before she met up with Phil and rejoined S.H.I.E.L.D- well the small, incredibly small, division he was rebuilding. He had been recruiting though. There were lots of individuals with enhanced powers now, some of which could be incredibly dangerous. From her previous encounters with Coulson's team, Clara knew, FitzSimmons, May and Daisy could handle it.
Clara turned the TV on to come face to face with yet another 'breaking news' report, this time from Vienna, not Nigeria. The accords were being signed. How convenient that Clara had missed all the calls government official, Everett Ross had left her. King T'Chaka of Wakanda had taken the podium to give a moving, if slightly degrading speech about the Avengers actions in Nigeria that cost him the lives of his people. She could just make out the flaming red hair of Nat in the crowd. No Steve but that came as no surprise.
There was another Wakandan man by the king's side. His son, a young man, was stalking suspiciously towards the windows.
"All this stuff with the Avengers is all completely avoidable." Heather moaned, as she wandered off into the kitchen.
"How so?" Clara asked, her eyes fixed to the screen, watching the Wakandan prince intently as he discovered the same thing Clara had seen in the background.
"They could sign and then disband, form a new group and the government would be powerless to stop them. They only have control over the Avengers, not this new team that just so happens to have the same people in. You could call them 'The Revengers' or something."
"Uh-huh." Clara responded, standing up to edge closer to the screen, just in case she'd been mistaken. It couldn't be, could it?
"Are you even listening to me?" Heather asked. Clara didn't respond. She could just stare at the TV screen as a massive bomb exploded, shattering the windows of the building, just inches away from where the King was standing. Heather jumped backwards as the almighty sound of broken glass and roaring fire burst through their speakers. Clara broke free from her trance, grabbed her phone off the couch and headed for the door. She dialed those numbers she had memorised and walked straight out into the street, Heather hot on her heels.
"It's me." She said when Phil picked up. "Did you see? The accords?"
"I saw."
"I need a jet, you got one spare?"
"Why?" He drawled, suspiciously and rightly so at the crazy idea that was forming in Clara's mind.
"You saw didn't you? The big explosion? That's a good enough reason I think." Clara snapped, motioning to Heather to get back inside. Heather shook her head.
"Why is that any of S.H.I.E.L.D's concern?"
"The Phil I know would never had doubted me." Clara retorted.
"What's the reason, Clara?" He demanded.
"You saw what happened right?" She asked but didn't need to wait for an answer, "You saw who did it?"
"No."
"Well I did. Metal arm and all."
