A/N: This one shot represents an idea that I had. Maybe there doesn't have to be a big defining moment for Joshaya. Maybe they will just fall together effortlessly. Hope you enjoy! ❤
P.S. I know this is a little all over the place. Let me know what you think anyway in the comments &don't forget to vote. Xo.
I've never let myself hope for anything. Hope is for suckers. I used to have hope, but life has showed me time and time again that having hope only disappoints. Riley says I need to have hope. That even disappointments are lessons. So, today I will let myself have a little hope. Today is my 8th birthday, and maybe, just maybe Riley is right. Maya tells herself before closing her eyes, whispering her wish into the wind and tossing a coin into the fountain in Central Park.
She watches the coin sink to the bottom before turning and leaving. She rushes back to Riley's for their annual birthday sleepover as the storm clouds roll in behind her.

*9 years, 364 days later*"So, I know you're sleeping over because you always do, but what else do you want to do for your birthday, Peaches?" Riley asks excitedly over pancakes in the Matthews family kitchen.
"My birthday isn't until tomorrow Riles and I really don't want to celebrate it." Maya says, shrugging and shoving another forkful of chocolate chip pancakes in her mouth.
"It's your 18th birthday, Maya." Riley states, rolling her eyes before narrowing them at her best friend. "We're celebrating."
The finality in Riley's voice caused Maya to groan. Riley does this every year. Maya would rather keep things small and intimate, but not Riley. If Riley Matthews was throwing a party, it was going to be over the top. It's not that she didnt appreciate it, because she always has, but it's just not her style.
"Fine. I have one request." Maya decides, giving in.
"Name it and it's yours, Peaches!" Riley says, beaming back at Maya with her goofy triumphant grin.
"I want the party on the roof." Maya says, watching Riley's face carefully. When her eyebrows furrow, Maya shakes her head. "That's the deal Riles. No roof, no party."
"Fine, but really Maya? Who is going to come to a rooftop party in January?" Riley complains, clearing her plate. She doesnt see Maya smirk behind her.
"Only the important ones." She says quietly, almost only to herself.

Maya reaches to silence her blaring alarm as she feels a very excited Riley jump out of bed. No sooner does Maya pull the covers over her head does Riley remove the duvet from the bed completely.
"Riles, noooo." Maya groans, hiding her eyes from the sun streaming in through the bay window.
"Maya, yes!!" Riley mimicks her best friend. "Time to get up and start celebrating this glorious day, Peaches!"
"I want to sleep. It's my birthday. Let me sleep." Maya says, pulling a pillow over her face.
"No can do. I need you up and out so I can get everything set for the party." Riley explains, snatching the pillow from Maya, just as she had done with the blanket.
"Way to make a girl feel special, Riles." Maya snarks, smirking at Riley, who in turn rolls her eyes.
