It was such a relief to know today’s Friday. A two day break from teachers, people and surprise tests/quizzes.
Plus, I could take a break from avoiding Miguel. He still doesn’t know that I know the date he took me on was a dare. He also doesn’t know that I’m cancelling our sushi ‘date’ tonight. I was just planning on not showing up, hoping he would get the memo.
But of course, that plan didn’t go the way I wanted it to.
Evan, Sophia and I were walking to my house to prepare for the sleepover.
Yes, it was supposed to be tomorrow but since I mentally cancelled the date, I asked Austin and his buddies if we could do Friday. Luckily they had no plans so they agreed.
Just as my two best friends and I were off school property, I heard my name being called by the voice that used to be responsible for the butterflies I felt. But now hearing that voice made me want to run away and cry.
I turned my head slowly and saw Miguel jogging up to the three of us. I told myself to keep walking; to ignore the voice. Yet I was still rooted in my place waiting for Miguel to stop. Evan stepped in front of me, as well as Sophia, so they were a wall separating me from Miguel.
“She doesn’t want to speak to you.” Sophia said when Miguel stopped in front of us.
“Why?” Miguel furrowed his eyebrows
He looked innocent and confused. Clearly he has no clue that I know the dates were a dare and this was some kind of game to him.
“Shut up Miguel. You sure as hell know what you did.” Evan hissed.
I flinched at his tone. It was so threatening and venomous. Evan was a genuinely jolly goofball. He was always happy and got along with everyone he met. It was rare to see Evan so threatening and pissed off.
“No, I don’t. How can I know if you don’t tell me?” He said.
He pushed his way through Sophia and Evan so I was no standing in front of him. He was so close I could smell his cologne and his minty breath. He had a desperate but worried expression on his handsome face.
“Tell me Kat.” he pleaded. “What did I do?”
“You lied to me Miguel. That date you took me on? I know it was a dare from your friends and so was tonight’s date.” I answered.
I was impressed how steady my words came out.
“Shit.” He cursed as he ran a hand through is light brown hair. “Kat let me explain?”
“I’m not going to stand here while you explain yourself because there is no good reason to why you would do this to me except for your amusement.”
“But-“
“No.” Sophia interrupted. “She’s right. Who cares if your friends dared you to? If you really cared about Kat you wouldn’t have taken her out to the carnival.”
A pang of pain hit my heart. Sophia had a point. If he truly cared about me he wouldn’t have done the dare.
“Kat can we please just talk and-“
“No. You are no longer allowed to speak to her. And if I catch you even saying hi to her I will personally chop off your man parts myself.” Evan threatened.
With that said Evan and Sophia walked away. I stayed rooted to my spot as Miguel caught my eye and held my gaze. His stunning green eyes had me in a trance. His eyes flashed regret and pain. I wanted to look away so badly but I couldn’t.
