This was the British Colonization.
The British had ultimately signed ownership to Malaya in 1874, leaving the Malays to the mercy of colonists, true owners of the exquisite land leashed by their posh pets.
Colonization had wreaked havoc on the small coastal nation, and much was lost.
67 years of interdiction and banishment brought Colonial Malaya to the Japanese Invasion in 1941, where the Imperial Japanese troops seized and held Malaya within its coastal patrols, wary of the organizations within.
British were forced to join forces with the Communist Party of Malaya, a group fighting for the people, and confusion rotted the soldiers' will to fight. At this time, many were faced with the decision - to join their enemies, or to leave and witness the destruction.
Strangely, their common hatred for the Japanese Invaders brought some together, rather than left to tear the country apart.
