Part 15 - What I Have To Do

Both brothers sat just outside of the dungeon doors, warm back against the cold metal. Dean tilted his head back while taking huge gulps of the warm whiskey in his hand. Ignoring the burn of his throat, he passed the alcohol to his brother. Despite Sam’s usual aversion to hard alcohol, he took two gulps of the poison.

“I can’t lose her again, Sammy.” Dean sniffled while his shoulders shook with silent tears. “She deserved better than this.”

Sam could only nod numbly, agreeing wholeheartedly with his brother. “It has to be me, Dean.”

“No,” Dean said sharply. “I’m not letting you make that sacrifice.” Despite the finality of his words, his voice cracked. And seeping through the cracks were his guilt, his sadness, his anger, his pain, and his insecurity. “No matter what, she has to live. She has to.”

“I know.”

“Rock, paper, scissor?” Dean turned to his brother with a smirk. The curved corner of his lip falling short of his usual, signature grin.

Sam chuckled shortly, as if he had the wind knocked out of his lungs. “Sure.”
