Y/n POV
I wake up and look out my bedroom window. The smell of freshly baked pancakes filled my room. Coming out, I find Mom just setting down a plate on the table. “Morning Mom.” I said.
“Morning sweetheart. I’ve got your breakfast ready and your backpack is sitting beside the door.” She says smiling. I eagerly sit at the table and eat the warm, fluffy pancakes. The sweetness of the syrup brings out the pancake’s taste.
Once I finished my breakfast, I quickly picked out a plain T-shirt and shorts. My shoes were just converse but I liked them as long as they were comfy. I then grabbed my phone and backpack and left for school.
I get there just as a boy practically parking his bike and jumping over the railing just to get inside. I jog to the door only to see him sprawled on the floor with not only his belongings but, with a girl too.
I sighed thinking I’d be fine after knowing that he was okay when I felt a force push me into them. I look behind me to find nothing but let my eyes fall back to my front. “I’m so sorry! I don’t know how I got pushed but I just got here.” I said quickly.
“Its totally fine. My name is Max.” Max says. “And I’m Sydney. This is Kirby.” Sydney said while Kirby grinned. “Y/n. I guess that takes care of formalities.” I say with a shrug. “See you two around.” Sydney says as she and Kirby left Max and I alone.
I gave a nervous chuckle. “Guess it makes sense that the new kids become friends. My mom didn’t tell me much about this school except that one teacher she had here was Dr. Thornhill. She mentioned that I should stay on his good side or else my life here will be like heck.” I said.
Max nods and I notice his blue eyes that didn’t really fit well with his dark hair. “So, what’s your story?” I asked. “Oh, um. I’ve been moving around and I really want to stay in one place.” He says. I smiled as a thought came.
“That has to mean you got to see a bunch outside of town! I was homeschooled for my freshman year until I told my mom I wanted to attend a public school so here I am now.” I said with the ‘ta da!’ hands.
The bell rings and we look to each other. “Guess I’ll see you after school, Max.” I say heading to class. Max waved and I thought I saw a blush within his smile. I shrugged and my day in public school began.
By the end of the day, I walk outside to see the beautiful sunset. Its just ruined when I get pushed out of the way into a bush. I looked up to see Kirby trying to get his backpack from what I assumed were bullies.
I cleaned off the sticks and leaves and went to help Kirby. I paused when I saw Max on his bike grabbing Kirby’s backpack from one of the bullies. “Come on guys, it’s the twenty-first century. Don’t you do your bulling online these days?” Max asked.
The bully in the yellow shirt pushed Kirby aside and started towards Max. “So I help the kid getting picked on, and now I get picked on. That’s not very original, Bartholomew.” Max says. I chuckled slightly. “See you next fall.” Max says knocking the one he called Bartholomew down.
“After him!” Bartholomew said. He and two other guys grab their bikes and race after Max. “Woah. Max was like some kind of hero.” I said. “Yeah. I’m going to thank him tomorrow when I see him. See you later, Y/n!” Kirby says heading towards wherever his house was.
I walk home but just as I rounded the corner close to home, I heard an explosion. I look around and see weird blue wisps coming from a building. “Whatever happened must have been an accident.” I said to myself. I get home and I got straight to the TV and play my favorite show.
By the time I was halfway through my rewatch, my mom came in and she had a guy with slick black hair and a black suit that had a red tie and other small red details. “Y/n, this is Jason Naught. I just met him and I thought it’d be nice if he joined us for dinner.” Mom says.
I get up and held my hand out to shake his. He did so and I nodded. “Hello.” I said. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Jason says. I move a little bit away from him and then I turned the TV off. “I’ll be in my room doing my homework, Mom. See you.” I said hurrying to my room.
I sighed in relief closing my door but realizing I felt very uncomfortable around him. But then again, Mom tends to bring home random guys just out of the kindness of her heart. But Jason Naught had something about him that seemed off. Like, he was going to ask me to join some kind of cult off.
I finished my homework and checked online for anything talking about the explosion sound I heard on my way home from school. But it seemed like no one posted anything about it. “Weird. You’d think the media would be all over it.” I mumbled.
“Y/n, dinner time!” Mom says. “Coming!” I called back. I came out and saw that he was gone. “Where’d your friend go, Mom?” I asked sitting at the table. “He got a call from work and had to leave. But he was intrigued that you’ve had good grades. Jason asked if you wanted to get a tour of THI someday.” She says.
I shook my head. “I’m good. Besides, I’m way too busy for tours. You know how schools are.” I said. Mom chuckled. “I sure do.” She says. ‘But for all I know, your friend Jason might be trying to gather smart people just for something wicked.’ I thought while eating.
I clean my plate and head back to my room to hear a voice outside. “Low profile, got it.” A male voice says. I glance out my window but see no one. “Maybe I’m just hearing things.” I said before lying on my bed and falling asleep. The next morning, I woke up to someone's scream.
I yawned but proceeded to prepare for school, silently thanking the person for waking me up. I didn’t really have an alarm set so I was glad I heard it. ‘Whoever screamed must live above my apartment floor. And to believe it, a thump above occurred and I chuckled.
‘That’s why you keep a clean room or else you end up tripping over stuff.’ I thought. Checking the time, I grab my backpack and head to school just to see Max and Kirby. “Awe man, Sydney is gonna kill me.” I heard Max mutter.
I shrug it off but then I saw him in the cafeteria talking with Sydney. I walk over and smiled. “Hey, how are you guys doing?” I asked. “Max and I were just giving each other our phones back. He made me a playlist.” Sydney says.
“Sounds nice. Yesterday was weird for me. Strange explosion sounds and my mom bringing home some guy who looks like he’s in some cult trying to gather smart people like me. I don’t know, things could’ve been better.” I said.
“I better get going. See you around Y/n and Max.” Sydney says leaving. I look towards Max but he’s already leaving as well. ‘So much for trying to have friends.’ I thought just as I felt my phone vibrate.
“Huh?” I said looking at the message. “I talked with your mother and she said I could come and show you around THI. Just come here after school and one of my associates will show you around.” I read. I groaned but put my phone away. ‘Guess I’m going to a cult thing.’ I thought.
