The sun had set and Kalel was sitting cross-legged in front of me. Our high had gone away after an hour or so, but I told her everything about Jason and how I got involved with all of his bullshit.
"He did that to you?" she brushed her thumb over the scar on my cheek.
"Yeah, but what he did to Jason makes it look like nothing." I glanced down at my hands and felt myself getting angry, "That bastard shot and killed my brother and I watched it all happen, but couldn't do anything about it."
Kalel brought her hand up to my cheek, making me look up at her, "I'm so sorry you had to go through that."
I noticed the sincerity in her eyes and it's like all the anger in me vanished. She moved her hand down from my face and grabbed my hand, "You don't have to talk about it anymore if it's too much."
I smiled weakly at her, "A lot of shit has happened in my life. Talking about it is-it's relieving."
"Do you talk about it with Derek or does your mom know?"
"Yeah Derek and I talk. Our mom has no clue, though."
"Why don't you tell her? Maybe she can help."
I removed my hand from hers. "See that's the thing. I don't want to tell her and I don't need her help. I've got everything handled," I said, completely annoyed.
She blinked her eyes at me, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you mad."
I rubbed the palm of my hand over my face and shook my head, "No, I'm sorry. It's just really hard for my mom now that our dad is on the other side of the world because of his job. I just want to be able to take care of her."
"You're not so bad," she smiled at me.
"I'm all bad. You shouldn't even want to talk to me after all that I've told you."
"I said that I'm not afraid of you."
"But now that you know, things are going to be different. That man from early might try to mess with me by using you so what if something happens? If you get hurt because of me..." I looked straight into her eyes.
"If I get hurt, it'll be my own fault," she shrugged. "I don't want to stay away from you. You intrigue me, but I don't know," she shook her head. "I'm also very fascinated."
"So you're not going to turn the other way when I see you in school?"
She giggled, "I wouldn't be sitting here in front of you if I didn't want to be your friend."
I brought her hand up to my lips and give it a light peck, "Je me sens très honoree, princesse."
She snatched her hand back so fast, "What did you just call me?"
I couldn't help but laugh, she obviously didn't know french. "I said that I feel so honored, Princess."
She looked down at her lap out of embarrassment, "Oh."
A few seconds of silence passed by until her phone started ringing. "It's my dad," she said before answering it.
While she talked to her dad, I found myself staring at her. Not in a creepy way, just in admiration. Kalel was an extremely beautiful girl. From her caramel colored skin to her striking blue eyes, and then there was her tamed light curly hair. Damn. She was not only beautiful on the outside, but on the inside as well. I may not have known her for long at all, but I could already tell the kind of person that she was. Even though she knew about the drugs, fights, killings, she was still here wanting to be my friend. She damn sure was making this bet extremely hard on me now.
