Aera

Tack! Tack! Tack!

I was still half asleep when I heard the consistent noise of pebbles hitting my glass balcony door. I roll off my bed lazily, yawing in the process making my eyes water. I slide my feet into my bunny slippers then made my way to the balcony door. I opened the the dark curtains that grazed the wooden floor.

The sun was just starting to set and the sky was painted different shades of pink and purple.

I slowly open the sliding door then stepped out to meet the cold breeze. I shivered before going right to the end of the balcony and looked down.

A boy with silvery blue hair was looking up at me. He scratched his head in confusion, "is this not Song Nari's house?" He shouts.

I shake my head. I didn't know who Song Nari was either. But then it hit me, "did they own this house before? We only bought this house at the start of this year."

"I see," he says faintly, a little disappointed. It looked like he was about to walk away when he says, "what's your name?"

I didn't know wether or not I should trust this strange boy but he looked nice enough. "Kang Aera," I smiled. "What's yours?"

"Lee Chan," he replies. "Kang Aera can I come up?"

Come up? What did he mean? Before I could answer he suddenly disappears under the balcony. I tried to lean over but I really couldn't see where he was.

After a few seconds later his head pops up in front of my face. He had climbed the vines growing against the wall.

I panicked and let out a scream.

His eyes widen then tried to cover my mouth, he loses balance and almost falls backwards.

I was quick enough to grab hold of his arms. I then help him over the railing and onto my balcony.

"Hi," he smiles widely causing me to blush a little. He's a lot cuter up close.

"H-hi," I wave my sweater paws at him.

"Aera, honey are you okay in there?" I hear my mom suddenly knocking at the door.

I panic and push him onto the old, green couch at the corner of the balcony then go back into my room. "I was just fangirling over EXO mom!" I reply as I jump back into bed and pretend to scroll through my phone.

She comes in and looks at me disappointingly. "Aera did you nap in your uniform again?" She points at my red plaid school skirt.

"I wore a hoodie over it..." I give her a cheeky smile and started flopping around the ends of the long oversized sleeves.

Mom sighs, "try not to let your uniform crease alright darling? We can't afford to be washing and ironing your clothes every week anymore. The electricity bills are getting too expensive for us to pay."

I nodded in understanding, "I'll change soon," I promised.

"Good girl," she exits my room and leaves the door ajar.

I blow my overly long fringe out of my eyes. "I hate being poor," I mutter as I close my door fully. I then head back out to the balcony where the boy, Chan, was comfortably laying on the old couch.

He has his hands under his head and his legs crossed. His eyes were closed and his lips were slightly open.

I sit on the arm of the couch and just stared at him. I wondered how old he was.

After a few minutes his eyes open slowly, "when did you get there?" he sits up startled.

"Couple minutes ago?" I shrug.

"I didn't even hear you, you're like a cat," he brings his hands up to his face and does a 'buing buing.'

I giggle at his sudden aegyo, "how old are you?"

"Seventeen," he says as he sits up. He then pats the now vacant seat beside him.

I sit sideways so we were facing each other and crossed my short legs. "Me too! What school do you go to?"

"A dance school," he grins proudly. "In America."

I pout, "stop lying."

"I'm not!" He waves his hands. He then leans back and takes his phone out of his front jeans pocket. He scrolls through it for a bit then hands it to me.

Displayed on the screen was a selfie of himself in front of the Hollywood sign.

"That's from my apartment view. Cool right?" He crosses his legs too then cups his face with his hands.

I hand his phone back feeling a little jealous, "you've finished high school?"

He nods, "last year. I got brought up a grade back in middle school because of my brains," he taps his temple.

I wasn't sure if he was joking but I decided to shrug it off. "Who's Song Nari anyway?" I place my head on the back of the couch.

His eyes sadden a little, "she lived here when I left for America last year but she never told me she moved."

I took note of his expressions and came to the conclusion that he must have liked her, or maybe still does.

"My parents live next door by the way," he points behind me to a slightly taller brick house. "Welcome to the neighbourhood, neighbour."

I put a hand over my mouth to refrain myself from gasping, "your mother is my boss and your father is my homeroom teacher!"

"Small world," he laughs. "Why don't you come over for dinner some time and kiss up to them? You might get a bonus," he rubs his thumb against the tip of his other fingers, "or a higher grade from what you deserve," he winks.

That would have been nice but also a bad idea. If anything I would just make everything worse, or even get on their bad side. Everyone I meet tend to think I'm cute and loveable but in reality I'm honestly just bad at keeping a conversation which makes me look shy.

"Anyways," he stands up and does a quick stretch. "I better head off, it's dark."

I didn't notice it but it did get awfully dark in a short amount of time. The street lights were already shining brightly.

"Open your curtain for once," he points into my room and at the curtains hanging over my bed. "We could have met a week ago if you did. You can see my room through the window behind it."

I never opened those curtain since I napped so much. It was too much effort to keep opening and shutting it.

"Why aren't you speaking?"

I turn my head back to him, "oh right," I say a little embarrassed. "It was nice to meet you, Lee Chan."

He pats my head, "you too, Kitty." He goes over to the railing then effortlessly jump over it, grabbing the vines. "I'll come back tomorrow." With that he was off, sliding down the vines like a mad man.

"Kitty?" I breathed out. "Did he just give me a nickname?"
