Her eyes slowly opened to the bright sunshine and the calming sea. She sat up, rubbing her eyes and peered around. She could hear the shouting of the crew from outside the cabin, but she was alone. Apparently the Captain had decided not to disturb her. She pulled off the blankets and put her bare feet on the polished wooden floor. She began to tip-toe towards the door, making sure not to be found by any of the crew she opened the door a smidge and looked out. The crew was busy working as usual and was too distracted to notice her. She breathed a sigh of relief and began to close the door again. It wouldn't shut.
"Good morning!" She huffed in anger and looked up to see the Captain smiling down and at her and his foot in the door way. "You've been asleep for quite a while" He told her and pushed himself into the room and walked towards his desk.
She said nothing.
"Still giving me the silent treatment 'eh?" He chucked as he sat on his chair and put his legs upon the desk. "You're welcome to stay in here, I know how the crew can be" He offered.
She thought carefully before she answered. Go outside and face the crew that hated her, or stay in the cabin with someone that had destroyed her life but was trying to make up for it?
She huffed again and moved away from the door and went back to her ledge. She didn't want to look at him so she forced herself to look out at the endless ocean.
"Are you always this moody?" She turned her face to see him studying her.
"Only to the people who have ruined my life and I'm stuck on a ship full of them" She growled and looked away again.
"Oh come on, at least your not dead!" He exclaimed.
"Better dead than be here with you" She grumbled.
"Fine! You know what get up and jump off the ship!" He had snapped, completely fed up "Go on, do it! Seeing as you'd prefer it!" He had jumped up from his chair and his voice was no longer comforting.
"Maybe I will" She stood up too, trying to hold her ground. But she was secretly terrified, feeling as though she had some kind of point to prove.
"You're most welcome to" He gestured towards the door.
"Fine!" She shouted and opened the doors with a bang. She marched right to the side of the boat and looked down at the now scary sea.
She gulped.
The Captain had followed her out and was standing there with his arms crossed. He nodded his head, gesturing for her to continue.
She looked back at the sea and put her foot on the side, hoisting herself up by holding onto the ropes. She lifted her other foot up and stood on the edge of the boat, trying not to cry.
By now the whole crew had stopped what they were doing and were watching. The Captain hadn't moved, his eyes fixed on her.
She took in a deep breath and closed her eyes. She didn't want this life, a life of stealing and surrounded by people who hated her.
She let go of the rope and fell forwards plunging towards the freezing water. Yet she never reached it. She opened her eyes and looked up to see the Captain holding on to his boat with one hand and holding her wrist in the other.
"WHY!?" She screamed at him.
"Because I don't want you to die, you have too much... potential" He used his strength to lift her up first and then himself.
He brushed down his long grey coat with his hands and didn't look at her. She looked down at her feet and the crew returned to their jobs, whispering between them.
"Thank you, again" She mumbled.
"Don't ever do that again" He told her sternly and left her standing there.
She suddenly felt stupid. Of course she didn't want to die, why did she say that? Was she trying to seem strong? She thought of her dad again and put her hands over her face. She tried to calm down and think of something else, anything else. She had no other family. Her mother had ran away when she was young, leaving her and her father to fend for themselves. But she had a happy life anyway, her father always caring for her.
But things were different now. She was in the open sea with endless possibilities and opportunities. But she was alone in this very huge, never ending world. She had stayed away from the cabin for the rest of the day, trying not to infuriate the Captain any more than she already had done. The sky had began to darken as she looked out from the edge of the ship. She was imprisoned in her own head trying to forget bad memories to move on. But her body just wouldn't let her.
A crew member had began to walk around the ship, lighting the oil lamps. It was quiet out on the deck, most of the crew had gone below to get some well needed sleep. Jasmine yawned but was trying to delay going to the cabin to sleep. She didn't want to look at the angry stare of the captain. She sighed and slid down the side of the boat, sitting on the deck with her back against the side. She leaned her head back and closed her eyes, trying to focus on the calming waves. When she was growing up she'd always had the childish dreams of becoming a pirate, but people frowned upon that and kept her away from the water. Now she was living her dream, but now felt that she didn't want it. She wanted to be back at home, with her dad, to be happy. But all of this was impossible. Jasmine was struggling, putting her head on her knees and screamed into them, the sounds muffled.
But then the screams continued. She looked around, double checking she wasn't still screaming. She jumped up and her eyes darted around. The screams got closer and she could tell it wasn't coming from their ship.
It was coming from another.
