prompt; write about two leaders from separate Clans that become mates
my first entry for WarriorzLove's writing contest! I didn't think this would be as long as it ended up being, but here you go!
________________________________________Juncostar glanced down at his Clan, the cats he was meant to lead.
Why did he do this to them? He'd betrayed them in the highest degree— by taking a mate from their enemy Clan. What was worse, his new mate already had a mate in her Clan.
She'd been juggling the two cats for moons now; he did not know what would happen if she were to bear kits. Juncostar declared the Clan meeting over (he had announced that they would be sending out more border patrols), and padded down the hill he was previously standing on.
Thoughts crowded his mind. The previous night played through his head on repeat. Duckstar had asked him to be her mate in private, while they were stargazing. He asked what her mate would think immediately, before he even considered saying yes.
But Duckstar just blinked her pretty brown eyes and said her mate would never need to find out. This made Juncostar nervous, and guilty, and so many feelings he did not want to feel.
How would his Clan react if they knew? How would Duckstar's mate react? Not in a good way, he decided. But, thinking back, was it really a bad thing that they were together? He remembered the day they met, of course, as apprentices at a Gathering.
"Hey, what's that cat's name?" Juncopaw heard a strange voice say from behind him. The sun was still hanging in the sky, but barely, and the rest of the clearing was washed with the golden rays of the sun, including Juncopaw's sister, Cardinalpaw.
"I think Jaggedpaw? Something that starts with a 'juh' sound," came another voice. Juncopaw turned around to see three ValleyClan apprentices staring at him and his sister, who also turned around. The cat in the middle, the only she-cat, gasped a little at the sight of Cardinalpaw.
The apprentice was a calico, with brown eyes and a stubby-tail.
"What happened to you, ugly?" the she-cat apprentice said without skipping a beat. The two toms next to her exchanged nervous looks and then backed away from her.
Juncopaw assumed they didn't want to see him tear this obnoxious she-cat's limbs off her body. But before he lashed out he calmed himself and said, "She had an acci—"But before he could finish his sentence his sister had adjusted her posture and was now clearing her throat. "A hawk clawed my face when I was a kit. It hit both of my eyes and did what you see here." She gestured to her face with a paw.
Juncopaw didn't think his sister was ugly. Sure, the scars that snaked down her face and across her snout were, but she wasn't. Her eyes were grotesque and a little bulging from the wounds, but she wasn't any of that. She was beautiful in his eyes. Juncopaw felt his temper cooling. If Cardinalpaw could stick up for herself, then there was no problem anymore. The ValleyClan apprentice would surely apologize now."Couldn't fight it off?" the apprentice sneered. Her stub-tail was jerking back and forth and she smirked.
Juncopaw had had it. He launched himself at the she-cat and tackled her to the ground. She snarled and swiped at his face, but only tore out a clump of dusty brown fur from his neck. His eyes narrowed and he flipped her over his shoulders and kicked her away from him.
The calico apprentice turned to leap back at him, but a large black she-cat appeared out of nowhere and grabbed her by the scruff. Juncopaw tried to stop himself from running forward but he already put his energy into it— and just like that, teeth clamped on his neck and he was pulled back a few mouse-lengths.
