Mistgaze stared down at the gorge, where his mate had just fallen to her death. He whipped his head around to see foxes approaching him, followed by the leader of his Clan, who appeared to be herding the foxes towards him. Mistgaze's thick fur was whipping as the wind beat his pelt. He was so confused.

Plumstar's wicked grin that Mistgaze managed to glimpse through the red fur— that got closer and closer by the second— would be seared in the senior warrior's mind forever. The foxes barked at him as his paws slipped on the rocks near the edge of the cliff. Fear gripped his heart. What could he do? The options were limited.

In the end he ran for it. Directly into the foxes. Somehow he avoided them all.
Plumstar was so small that Mistgaze leaped over her and bolted for the forest. His paws thudded against the rough forest floor and he heard the agonized cries of his leader and his minions as they followed suit.
He did not stop running until he reached the river. The water was rushing so loudly that it could almost be heard over the blood pounding in Mistgaze's head. A flood. After half a second of hesitation the warrior leapt into the water. Coldness engulfed him. The current dragged at his fur and the senior warrior struggled to open his eyes. When he finally did he swam downstream, and the current helped greatly. Mistgaze stayed underwater much longer than he thought his lungs could take. He wasn't even sure if Plumstar was following him. One of his legs hit a rock, and the pain almost made Mistgaze pass out.
For a few more minutes Mistgaze swam, and then he managed to drag himself out of the river. Plumstar was nowhere to be seen. Neither were the foxes. Shaking out his fur, Mistgaze walked away to catch his breath.

"Pssst! Mistgaze!" a familiar voice called out a few minutes later. "In here!"
"Sandclaw?" Mistgaze refrained from rolling his eyes given the circumstances.

"Yes," whispered the voice again. Mistgaze saw where it was coming from. A thick bramble bush that sat at the foot of an oak tree.

"How am I supposed to get in there?" Mistgaze hissed as he approached the bush. "You stupid cat. There's no way I can fit."
Sandclaw was a skinny, frail, good-for-nothing cat. Mistgaze couldn't believe this was the cat he was stuck with. "Aw, come on, Misty! There's some room. Don't worry."

I can't believe I'm doing this, Mistgaze thought. He squeezed into the bush. He hated to admit it, but Sandclaw was right. There was room. Tail curled around his paws, he shot Sandclaw an appreciative look. "Thanks."

"No problem," came Sandclaw's response. He paused, and then looked at Mistgaze with sad amber eyes. "Do you know the whole story?"
Mistgaze sighed and told his Clanmate that he didn't.
"I think you were out hunting with Fawnsnow this morning, right?"

"Fawnsnow!" Mistgaze cried. "I almost forgot— Sandclaw, she died!" he lurched forward. "She fell! The foxes, Plumstar, they'd cornered us! What do I do? What do I tell my kits?" He stared in shock. His heart was thumping again, but not because of adrenaline this time.
Sandclaw looked sadly at Mistgaze. "I'm sorry," he murmured. "You don't know. Immediately after you left, the foxes came. They were speaking our tongue. Plumstar told us that this was the beginning of a new era, and she had been planning this since she became leader." He paused again, and fixed Mistgaze with a sad look again.
"The foxes killed Nighttuft and Quailwhisker right away, and then everyone scattered. They caught Yarrowpaw and Asterbranch after, I saw it. Plumstar said it was because all these cats weren't pure enough for her 'new dawn'. No one knew what that meant."
