EXT. ROAD - DAY
Miles is walking by the road, there's a dense forest either side. He sees a white van coming, he holds his thumb out.
The van stops, Dreton (55) opens the door on Miles' side. Miles keeps his cap down. Dreton's wearing a brown leather duster and a straw cowboy hat with a cigarette in his mouth.
DRETON
Get in, you're in the middle of nowhere, kid.
MILES
Yeah, I figured.
INT. DRETON'S VAN (MOVING) - CONTINUOUS
Miles sits in the passenger seat and closes the door.
MILES
You're doing me a kindness, how long have you been driving?
DRETON
Oh, I've driven nearly all through the night. I'm Dreton, by the way.
MILES
Miles.
Dreton takes out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter.
DRETON
Do you smoke?
MILES
I do, thanks.
Miles takes the pack and lighter, he opens the box but then turns one cigarette upside down before taking one and lighting it in his mouth and passes them back to Dreton.
DRETON
Why did you turn that one upside down?
MILES
Sorry, force of habit. It's the lucky cigarette. You turn down one and make sure you know which one is your last cigarette - I don't know why people do it.
DRETON
Maybe a guy trying to control his fate, despite it being uncontrollable.
MILES
I've never thought about it.
Miles goes quiet.
DRETON
Are you a drifter?
MILES
You could say that, are you?
DRETON
Yes, I am. I live in this van, I don't have to be locked into anywhere.
MILES
You seem pretty disconnected, probably don't even watch TV?
DRETON
Nope, don't even read the paper. The outside world is just an ever-changing postcard at my window.
