Chapter fourteen: apple to my eye
-
Jacklyn didn't know why Bucky wouldn't share his past with her, she didn't know why she wanted to know him so bad, she didn't know why when people pushed her away it didn't matter unless it was Bucky, she wanted him to be able to trust her. She had opened up to him so easily, she couldn't help but think that made her stupid.Bucky looked at the ground like he was reliving something horrible, his eyes shone with an emotion she recognized as pain, her stomach filled with guilt and she reached forward and placed a hand on his arm reassuringly. "I'm sorry for bringing it up." She said quietly, turning her head away, Bucky sighed and reached for her hand. "I didn't mean to snap at you." He said in a hushed tone. "It's not fair to ask you to open up and for me to shut you down like that, I'm sorry." Bucky said, Jacklyn smiled at him, squeezing his hand.
"It's okay." She said, Bucky didn't realize how happy he had made her just then, her whole life she had told herself that she was in the wrong, that all the things Hydra had been doing to her were somehow justified and she was just the insane one. Bucky was the first person to make her realize that wasn't the case at all.
She brought her attention back to Bucky, who was staring back at her and wondering what she was thinking in her head, she couldn't help but smile like a little girl again when she met his eyes.
"In Indiana," He started, Her face softened. "You don't have to-" "I had a sister," He interrupted her, curiosity took control of her rational side and, without letting go of his hand, allowed him to continue to the story. "I was living with my father and my sister, my mom died of cancer when I was young and my dad followed about a year after. My sister was took to some all-girls boarding school afterward and I had to move here, to Brooklyn, when I was around nine."
Jacklyn stared at him, he had only said a few sentences, but it was enough that she felt like she knew him better. "I'm so sorry, Buck." She said, she leaned forward and put her chin on his shoulder, holding his hand like it was a life preserver in the ocean that was the mess that surrounded them.
"It's not your fault, Jack, don't be sorry," He said, rubbing her palm with his thumb. Her cheeks reddened slightly at his intimate touch, but she made no move away from him. He turned his head a little bit to look at her, his face coming closer to hers than he would have thought. All thoughts about his past exited from his mind, they were so close she could feel his breath on her skin, she could see his eyes clearer than ever before.
She thought about backing away, but to her own surprise she didn't, she didn't feel claustrophobic, she felt strangely safe. They stared at each other for a moment, but that moment seemed like an eternity to Jacklyn.
A few seconds passed and Bucky closed the distant hesitantly between them, meeting their lips together, Jacklyn's eyes widened, she hadn't been this close to anyone ever, never had a kiss before, she didn't know how to handle it. She allowed her eyes to draw close and sank into his soft and gentle embrace, wrapping her arms around neck.
Bucky put his hands on her waist and separated their lips, Jacklyn smiled at him, searching for words to say, she was speechless. She wanted to tell him how she had just realized how much she had longed for that, how special he made her feel, but instead she just stared at him. But that itself said a thousand words. He ran his thumb over her chin, tracing her jawline all the way back to her ear, then brushing her muddy-brown curls behind her ear.
His hand went to the back of her head and he went to kiss her again,
"Hey, Jacklyn-" Steve Rogers called, entering through the door that Bucky had forgotten to close. Jack and Bucky quickly jumped apart, the girl's face went red with sheer embarrassment. "Oh, you guys busy?" Steve said smugly, staring at Bucky with a proud grin. "N-no." Jacklyn said, "Did you need me?" She asked, Steve nodded, remembering what he came to do.
"Oh yeah, Peggy wanted to speak with you before it got dark outside," Steve said, Jacklyn quickly nodded and jumped up, turning to look at Bucky for a second. She couldn't help but grin at him, before brushing past Steve hurriedly.
As Steve watched her disappear, he turned back to Bucky with a grin plastered on his lips. "So, you and Jacklyn huh?" Steve said, Bucky smiled, "Butt out, Steve." Said Bucky. "C'mom, we're buds, right?" Steve replied jokingly. Bucky pursed his lips together. "How about I start asking about Peggy?" Bucky insisted, Steve shook his head. "Let's not go there,"
Jacklyn walked out of the building, looking around for Peggy, Jack had forgotten to ask where Peggy was. Nonetheless it didn't take but a minute for Peggy to approach her. "Hey Peg, you wanted to see me?" She asked Peggy, who nodded. "Yeah, I was thinking about what you said, about feeling the vibrations of the objects around you, I think I may know what causes your abilities." Peggy told her quietly.
"Really? What?" Jacklyn asked desperately, feeling her sudden urge to know what causes her earthquake powers and how to control it.
Peggy looked at the busying men around them, she glanced back at Jacklyn. "Not here."
-
The two women went back behind the SSR base and into the wooded area, not as far away as the warehouse but far enough to where no one would notice the two of them talking. "Okay, so I was thinking about what you said, and then I remembered you felt the walls like vibrations. I couldn't figure out what could explain that, and then," Peggy reached into a satchel slung over her shoulder and pulled out a couple of pages. "I remembered that objects have vibration even when they are not in motion, and when they are in motion those vibrations are amplified. What I think you can do is control those vibrations or manipulate them." Peggy said, showing her research to Jacklyn. Jacklyn skimmed over it in awe, her jaw dropped.
Jacklyn heard a twig snap behind them and she quickly whipped around, her senses heightened and everything Hydra had taught her kicked into gear. "The SSR catches on fast, it took us fifteen years to figure that out," The all too familiar voice called. Her breath caught in her throat, her heart stopped, she knew who that voice belonged to, she knew even before he stepped into view.
"Albert," She said, horror coating her tone. "Who?" Peggy asked. Albert stepped into view, he had to mechanical prosthetics where his legs used to be, Jacklyn took and step back and Peggy drew her gun. A menacing smile spread upon his lips.
"Hello, Jacklyn. Miss me?"
