T.W. Homophobia(?)

Virgil messed with the band on their wrist, and sighed slightly. Their mother wasn't ever going to be observant enough to get it right. It frustrated them, their mother was supposed to love them, and care for them, and make sure they had everything they needed to live, but she didn't. They were convinced she hated them. As if having a gay child wasn't bad enough, she had to neglect their preferred pronouns, and boyfriends.

She wasn't worthy of being a mother, not that Virgil would say anything to her. She had too much say over their life, and they weren't about to lose the few people they could actually rely on.

They glanced at the clock, sighing before they picked up their phone and text Logan one word.

Green.

It meant it was a they/them day. They had bands for each gender, green for their no gender days, purple for girl days, and orange for boy days, and Logan had requested that they text him every morning the colour of the band they were wearing, to make it easier for him to remember, and so he would know before Virgil got to his house.

Their boyfriends were too good for them, and the second they came out to them, they were accepted, and there were no questions asked, minus how their boyfriends would know which gender he was that day. It took them a while, but with help, he decided to use the bands to help, it made it easier for them, too, because they could dress however they wanted but have the band telling other people what pronouns to use. If he looked feminine, and the band was green, it was still they/them, they just wanted to dress slightly less androgynously.

They sighed and pocketed their phone, picking up all their stuff, before heading out the front door, secretly happy to be able to get out, and for it to be a Friday, so he didn't have to see her all weekend.

The walk to their boyfriend's house, wasn't a long walk, but when they felt lousy, it seemed to take hours, especially when their mother had made their morning a living hell.

They had their music playing loud in their ears, and they were glad that Patton was already at Logan's by the time they got there.

"Morning, Virge!" He called out, making them smile, and remove their headphones.

"Morning, Pat." They gave him a quick hug, and let him press a kiss to their cheek.

"What colour today?" Patton usually asked Virgil when he saw them, having the words spoken, or seeing the band himself helped keep the colour fresh in his mind.

They held their wrist up, and Patton nodded, smiling.

"Got it!" He ginned, and wrapped an arm around Virgil's waist. "How are you today?"

"Not great." They mumbled, recalling the events of the morning.

"What happened."

"Mother happened." He muttered. "She can't ever get anything right, she doesn't pay attention, she's too absorbed in her own world to pay any attention to a stupid band around my wrist. I'm always her 'son' and nothing else. Her head is stuck in the 1950's gutter, and she refuses to leave. I want to give her time to get used to it, but it's been a year now, and it's not that hard!" They buried their face in Patton's shoulder, trying to remain calm. They knew getting worked up over it wouldn't do them any good, but it didn't stop them from wanting to scream, shout, and cry.

"I know, love, even if she never accepts it, we do, and we love you for who you are, so she can go and keep her head in that gutter, because she's not worthy of taking it out. If she can't see how perfect you are, then she doesn't deserve to have a child like you."

Virgil's cheeks were burning by the time Patton had finished talking, and they didn't want to remove their head from his neck, knowing how red they were.

"Thanks, I guess." They mumbled, and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek, before hiding their face, worried about someone else seeing it.

"Good morning." Logan's voice rang out behind them, and Virgil sent him a quick wave, not caring to remove their head, having gotten comfortable, and feeling safe. He felt someone grasp their hand, and they smiled softly.

"Hey, Lo." They mumbled, hearing Patton say something similar.

"Are you alright?" Logan questioned, wrapping an arm around their waist, best he could with Virgil still pressed against Patton.

"I will be."

They felt Logan's fingers trail up his wrist to the band, and they felt him mess with it slightly.

Logan smiled fondly at his significant other, and silently asked Patton if he could move. He didn't mean any harm by it, he just wanted to be able to see Virgil.

"Virgil?" They looked over to him, and smiled weakly, before placing themself in his arms, smiling as he tightened his hold on them. "Are you okay? I need a straight answer."

"Good luck with that."

"I need you to be more clear. Are you or are you not okay?"

"I'm not. But I will be. I just need time." They looked up at him, and smiled, pressing a quick kiss to his cheek.

"Okay."

Before long, Roman showed up, fashionably late as always, and Virgil made sure to make some sly comment about him, and his tendencies, all in good fun, before pressing a kiss to his lips, smiling as he tried to make it last longer, but Virgil not letting him.

"Virge." Roman whined, and they smiled, going back to Logan, letting him hold them. "Betrayal!" Roman screeched, and pouted.

Virgil flinched slightly at the sudden loud noise, but soon relaxed in Logan's arms, smiling at his boyfriends.

The walk to school was uneventful, and no one had much to say, so the four walked in silence, content to be holding one another's hands, and having their company.
