Day three went by in a flash, as everything went by smoothly. Although their limbs were tired and they were already sick of walking they had to keep going. Walk they must, and must they fight and boy would it be to be the only way to freedom. Their only way to a better life.
However just at the thought of president Nick Saint Claire never hurting them again made everything worthwhile. Worth what they were doing, worth the sacrifice. Yet maybe it wasn't worth the fact that they were all basically on the brink of dying. Even after spending week and weeks collecting food for this trip they still didn't have enough and even if they did most of it they wouldn't have even been able to carry.
"Bewty my heawd hurts!" Lilly cried looking up from her shoulder.
"It's ok Lil we'll be there very soon," Betty reassured with a sigh. "Very very soon," If they didn't get held up by anything else. If they even had the will and or power to keep going.
Lilly had only been getting worse and worse by the second- There being nothing any of them could do except keep going. They were all still practically kids, on their own. With a child. Two nights later that's when the raven-haired man woke up to crying.
"Betts?" He asked into the darkness.
She looked up from her knees, wiping the tears away. "It's nothing," She mumbled looking away.
"Please tell me," He mumbled going to her side in a heartbeat.
"With if she doesn't make it Jug?" His best friend asked glancing her sleeping sister's way. "Then it's all my fault,"
"No," He suddenly started looking into her hurting eyes. "This way she actually has a chance at help,"
She looked at him through tears not knowing what to say. "I-"
"And we'll find help... Then she'll be ok," He mumbled and before she could speak he wrapped her in a heartwarming hug.
"Juggie how many more days?" She questioned looking up from his chest.
"At the least three," He mumbled with a sigh. "I think that we could make it,"
"Yeah," She murmured with a yawn.
"Go back to sleep," He whispered unraveling his arms. "We're going to need all of the rest we can get for tomorrow,"
She nodded, going to lay down next to her sister however stopped as she saw her best friend wasn't with her. "Jug?" She questioned into the night. "Will you stay with me?"
"Yeah," He breathed crawling over. "Feel better now?" She nodded her face hiding into his side, as the next morning that became how they woke up... Together.
It had been days, and they were almost out of food... "I say we keep going through the night and make it there by morning," Jughead mumbled with a yawn.
It had been pitch black outside, Lilly in SweetPeas arms as she slept softly. "I can't go any longer," Betty whispered leaning against a tree for support. "We have been walking for days... And- And-"
"Betty get it together!" Fangs exclaimed shocking the whole group. "If we keep going through the night we'll finally get to safety!"
"I know but-"
"Here get on my back," Jughead mumbled.
"What? No... Then you'll be too tired!" She exclaimed with a sigh. "I'll just have to keep going," Everyone nodded as they continued on their journey the long journey that never seemed to want to end... The long journey that just kept going and going never wanting to stop.
"I don't know about this guys... This is dangerous," Betty whispered looking at the fast-flowing river in fear. "If we try and swim across it'll just take us!"
"Well we have to try or else we're never going to get to freedom," Sweet Pea mumbled with a sigh as he had been the first one in the water. "This is freezing!" The friends watched in disbelief as he struggled to swim across however he still managed to swim across.
"Ok I'll take Lilly on my back you guys can follow behind," Jughead explained slowly getting into the water having said that Lilly began to panic.
"Nwo Nwo!" She exclaimed now full-on crying.
"Lil it's ok... You're going to be ok," Betty reassured as they were now shoulder deep into the water. "Jughead's got you," And he did have Lilly as they made it to the other side safely... Yes, they were soaked however they had to, as Lilly laid on the bank of the river panting with fear still overlooking her features.
"Uh, guys where's Betty?" Sweet Pea asked looking around in shock.
Jugheads eyes widened in fear as he looked to the river not seeing the blonde girl anywhere in sight. That being when his best friend had indeed been carried down the river unable to scream due to the fear getting water inside her mouth.
"Betty!" They all exclaimed running down the side of the river trying to catch up to her and next thing the raven-haired man knew he had been back in the cold water reaching out to save his best friend finally gripping ahold of her tightly.
"P-Please don't let me go Jug," Betty gasped through pants as she gripped him tightly... Wait no scratch that they gripped one another tightly.
"I won't," He reassured as they both began to make way toward the bank of the river... And thankfully after many many struggles almost getting washed away once again, they made it. This time even more cold and wet.
"We need to find a way to get warm," Fangs whispered as the friends laid on the river's edge panting. "I'll make a fire," Jughead quickly went into his soaking backpack pulling out the matches they had brought.
"I don't know if they'll work," He mumbled handing them over to Fangs as Betty quickly turned to Lilly.
"Ok Lil we need to get you out of these wet clothes and into this semi-dry towel," Betty whispered looking at her shivering sister. Betty held up the towel shielding her little sister from the cold getting her out of her soaking clothes quickly wrapping her up in warmth.
"Please hurry with the fire!" Sweet Pea whispered wringing out his shirt as Betty couldn't help except watch him do so as his muscles flexing as his face showed concentration.
"Ah, ha got it!" Fangs exclaimed as in no time there appeared a medium-sized fire shinning before them.
They all got close huddling around the blankets they had brought sharing warmth and love as close to the fire as they could. Trying to take in all the heat they could. The wind of the night nipped against their skin as they managed to come even closer together trying as hard as they could not freeze to death.
So much for only another day and so much for going all night, this definitely put them behind and now they were cold and drained of energy although at least now they could finally get the sleep that they needed. As slowly Betty leaned down so that her head then began resting in Jugheads lap. Lilly's already in her's as slowly all five of them fell into a peaceful sleep.
Not knowing what the next day held, not knowing that the next day would only be tougher than all the others before. That it would be their final fight against finally making it to freedom.
