[Anzel's POV]
"We've just got back from the pack next door and we're already having a party, Pops?"
"It's been delayed for too long already. We can't wait to congratulate you." Mom says softly as she straightens and dusts her knee length skirt with her palms. Pops just let her answer me for him as he puts his casual party shirt on quietly.
"Mom, this is supposed to be a secret until he's hit his first heat wave. Do you-"
"Hush, Anzel. We're not announcing it, we're just celebrating it with you. Don't worry about it."
I sigh in frustration. "Aren't you tired, Pops? I just want to eat dinner and sleep. I've still got school tomorrow. It's Monday, remember?"
"Nah I've called Kaitlin to let her know you've just got back from a pack business. You're given one more day off from school. Just enjoy tonight."
"Pops. I have the finals in a month."
"You're going to do just fine, Anzel. We know how you do in school." Mom counters.
That's not the point, argh! I've always skipped some lessons and extra-curricular activities for pack business... I do all my best to catch up, like crazy... Even during test weeks... How-
Pops suddenly put a hand on my shoulder firmly. I look up into his serious eyes.
"Son. You're going to be free of that academic hell in just a few more weeks... And all the stuff that come after that are going to be even more complicated, school will only feel like a sweet dream. The times I brought you to the meetings or pack visits, and this last one as well, are to show you the glimpse into your adulthood full of more responsibilities than just school. When it's time for me to really let go of my power and title and pass them to you, you'll know how heavy it is to bear the whole pack, including the others above yourself. I'm just lucky I got your Mom as my mate. She actually bears half of mine even though she doesn't have to. It's also ingrained in her, as an Alpha."
I know their history. They've wasted more than a few years of their lives seeking for each other, before they finally met. Mom wasn't born here, and thanks to her travelling around to find Pops, she found and saved him during one of the pack's wars with a vampire coven. That fateful meeting actually helped to end the hundred year rivalry in between the pack and the coven. And now, Fana inherits Mom's old travelling habit... maybe to search for her own mate as well. She never told us why exactly she chose to not to lead the pack and travel outside instead, but I instinctively know that she wants to search for her mate.
She's roughly the same age as Kline...
Kline.
An orphan Omega my parents took in and nurtured as one of us. He's, in principal, my older brother, and five years my senior. We used to be close, like three siblings... But when he graduated high school, he moved out of our home and seek for outside job, and started to avoid me, until recently. But he never avoids Fana, or Pops and Mom. I don't know what to make of that.
When I finally hit puberty, I found out that he is my destined mate, and tried my best to get close to him again. But this weird gap of him not knowing about the two of us makes me shut my mouth even if I got to see him almost everyday in the last two years. I must look like a creep to him for deliberately following him around during all those times.
How can I explain everything to him without sounding like a weirdo?
"Anyway, we just want you to loosen up a little bit. Take it easy tonight. We're happy for you, so please, come down with us?"
Geez... she knows how to melt my heart.
"I understand, Pops. Mom. I'll party with you."
"Still no alcohol for you, though. Even if we Alphas can't be drunk by those things, you still have to follow the rules."
"Yeah yeah."
-
"I didn't know you invited the other packs to this party as well, Pops?"
"We've just killed two birds with one stone, so, why not? We've just made an alliance with them. So, this is a perfect cover for you."
My father and his weird way of settling things in one go. And I'm not even the main star for tonight. Not that I want to be the centre of attention anyway.
But, I understand the reasoning behind this setup tonight. The other pack was just attacked by a rogue pack of sorts, so by us helping them to fight these intruders and rebuilding their pack grounds all within the last few days, and making an alliance with them, we've just secured a treaty with them and one other helping pack. It's a good thing.
Tonight's party isn't too big and our pack manages to handle the few representatives from the other two packs well. I can never be like Pops, Mom and Fana who's outgoing and very active. In fact, I'm their opposite. A surprisingly nerdy werewolf. Even Kline's more active than me. See, he's working hard serving people voluntarily even though he's not our pack's catering team...
I down a few mocktails by the drink tables as I watch my mate walking around. He hasn't eaten his meal yet. Why is he so restless tonight?
I start to gather two plates of food as I follow his movements. When I'm done, I approach him from his side as casually as I can act.
"Kline, eat with me. We both haven't eaten dinner yet."
