I guess this is like a demon AU (or something) where Virgil's home is the setting in the Emperor's New Clothes music video.

*Roman's POV*

"Virgil, you really didn't have to-" I began as my boyfriend pulled a very small gift bag out of the picnic basket.

"No, no, I insist. I've given you something for our anniversaries. I've gotta keep some tradition" He smiled and handed me the bag. Even the bag was wonderful. I have no idea where he would have gotten something that was so fitted to us. He must have made it, or at least customized it to some degree.

"Virgil, I don't really know how to thank you. This day has just been so wonderful; the view, this picnic, you~"

"Oh, shut up, you, and open your gift." He shrank back into his hoodie, but even that couldn't hide that soft smile that I lived and breathed for.

"If you insist, darling." I laughed and looked in the perimeter of the bag for a card. If he stuck to tradition, there would be one. My eyes found a royal purple envelope.

"Read the card later. I don't want you randomly glancing up at me with a smug look on your face while I just sit here awkwardly." Virgil protested before I could even reach for the card.

"I haven't even done anything yet!" I tried to play dumb.

Virgil scowled at me and crossed his arms. "Six years of a minimum of 3 hours a day and five days a week together makes two people to know each other very well. Don't try to play dumb, prince charming, and just ignore the card for now."

"I'll just put it in my pocket." I shrugged and gently picked the wrapping paper out of the bag.

It was black and had small cartoon crowns on it. I knew he had used some sort of online design thing to make this. Because I knew he hated it, I meticulously flattened and folded the wrapping paper into a small rectangle and tucked it into the very side of the bag. I glanced up at him and saw him stifling a groan of apprehension.

"Ease up, Thundercloud. I'm just messing with you." I grinned. He curled his lips into a deadpanned sneer and raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything.

At the bottom of the bag was a small box. My heart skipped a beat. That must have been why Virgil was so anxious. I shakily reached in and took it out.

The box opened to reveal a ring that resembled a lightning bolt.

"I'm too tired and too lazy to get on one knee, but you're... the romantic one so you know what this means." Virgil had taken off his hood and leaned closer to me. I noticed that he had a matching ring that resembled a crown. "Roman Prince, would you give me the honor of being your husband?"

His husband. The butterflies in my stomach did somersaults and the wildest grin crept onto my face. "Virgil Black, the honor would be all mine."

And with that, I kissed him like there was no tomorrow.

It was just me and him in that moment. The thought vaguely passed through my mind that he was tired and lazy, so I moved closer to him, cradling his head in my hands and running my fingers through his hair. I didn't have to open my eyes to know that he was smiling. I tilted my head and chuckled when he gasped.

We kissed until the sun had set and it was too cold to do it anymore, so we broke apart, breathless and teeth chattering, and packed up. We held hands on the way back to the car, my other hand holding the bag now only containing tissue paper and his other hand holding the picnic bag.
