Roman was, in almost every aspect, indistinguishable from humans, despite being a demon. He was tall and lean, with fiery hair that was somewhere between brown and orange that had changed stylistically countless times throughout the eras. Back in Eden, he'd been the serpent to tempt Adam and Eve, but that was a very long time ago and he didn't identify with the snake-ness anymore. He'd since moved on to something vaguely phoenix-like. It wasn't a concrete definition, but more like an abstract idea.
Now that Roman thought about it, he'd changed quite a lot throughout his time on Earth. Down in Hell, he'd been much more green. With envy. Jealousy. Unsettled hostility. But also because his scales had been green, quite obviously with the intended effect of symbolism. No matter his form, there were always hidden theatrics in his character.
But he'd been a different demon back then. For Someone's sake, he'd been called Remus all that time ago. Roman wrinkled his nose at the memory of the name. He'd been called something even more different back in Heaven, before he Fell, but he didn't like thinking about that, either. It had been behind him for 6000 years and counting. He hadn't looked back once.
Actually, he didn't really Fall, but more so Ran. He'd created the hues of the sky, the stars, galaxies, all the fantastical mysteries of space and beyond. And when he was done, there was nothing else for him to do. While he'd nurtured his creations with love and affection, he hadn't ever taken the time to notice the impartialness and coldness that the other angels had to offer. The stark contrast between what he had given the stars and what he was being given by his "associates" was too much to handle. It was far too jarring for him to stay.
His fiery red hair lost its warmth, its hue fading to a cool brown at best. Some parts of it were even gray. He'd ran down to the humans, to the deepest darkest cave, and then some.
He found himself, eventually, in the depths of Hell, where the darkness and evil sunk into his eyes. Where the lights tinted his outfit into something... different.
And yet, he still didn't quite fit in there. He could tell by the passing glares, the echoing jeers, the whispers that followed through the halls. So he was assigned to go to Eden in serpentine form to essentially start the immortal battle over humanity: tempt Adam and Eve.
That moment was, arguably, the bane of his current and eternal existence. Though, it had brought about his only real reason of staying on Earth at all.
"I just hope I didn't do the wrong thing."
Patton was, while very much the human definition of "angelic", was by far the worst angel to have ever existed. He'd been on earth amongst humans since the beginning. Well, since Eden, at least. 4004 BCE, not a moment sooner. And his experience was not directly related to skill.
His eyebrows were knotted with worry after seeing Adam and Eve walk into the desert with nothing but the sword he'd given them, and he genuinely didn't know how far they'd make it. But his duty was to stay in Eden, so in Eden he would stay. At least, until Upstairs gave him new orders.
He was still frighteningly new to this whole angel business, but that was what he was created to do, so he would do so without questioning. Not out loud. He had, however, needed to get out of the situation about the flaming sword. Perhaps he shouldn't have lied to God. They were bound to found out if they didn't already know.
"You're an angel. I don't think you can do the wrong thing," said the previously-snake-demon standing next to him on the garden wall.
"Oh, thank you, thank you." Patton belatedly noticed how the demon had started a conversation with an angel. Never the matter; he seemed to be polite enough.
He'd wanted to say more, but words had failed him. Instead, he stood there, teetering over the edge of the wall nervously until rain fell for the first time. Patton, almost instinctively, raised his wing up for the demon to stand under.
"Roman." Patton was surprised to hear the demon speak with such urgency. "My name's Roman."
"Pleasure to make your acquaintance." He noticed that Roman's green scales had a sort of red shine to them. It made him look lighter, he supposed. "I'm Patton." He said with a smile.
So there they stood, staring at the desert in the rain
