"Don't forget to ask them! And text me tonight!" Sam called after me as I headed home.
"Okay, I will!" I smiled at him, but as soon as I turned around my happy face morphed into fear.
I knew I had to at least ask my parents, because lying to Sam just did not seem worth it, but I knew they would say yes. And a yes would spell complete disaster.
I suppose I could just ask and then convince them that I can't go. It probably won't be that hard. I could say I had homework, and I didn't know Sam too well. And besides, I don't even own a bathing suit. This might not be as big of a problem as I thought it was going to be.
I had been thinking so hard I almost passed my house. Actually, I did pass my house. And I probably wouldn't have noticed if I didn't trip over that tree root.
Hoping nobody saw, I casually swiveled around and made my way to the doorstep. Taking a deep breath, I turned the doorknob and put on my happy daughter attitude. Almost instantly, my "mom" bounced up from the couch to ask me how my day was.
"It was great mom," I fake smiled at her.
"Great! Look what I found for you at Target!" she exclaimed.
I stared in horror as she holds up a neon green and blue tye dyed one-piece.
"Isn't it cute?" she smiled and bounced it around in the air. "Try it on!"
I forced yet another smile as I reluctantly took it from her.
"Thanks mom, it's great! I'll try it on later, but I have to ask you something first." Well, I might as well get it over with. I was already feeling sick to my stomach.
"Yes sweetie?"
I took a deep breath. "You know that boy, Sam, who I told you about?"
"Oh, yes he sounds so nice!"
"He, um, invited me to go to his cabin this weekend and-"
"Well that's wonderful! Are you going to be swimming? you could take your new bathing suit! This is grea-"
"Mom! I'm not done yet! I was thinking... well, I don't know if I should go. I mean, I just met him, and besides, I have homework..."
"That's ok! What better way to get to know him than to spend an entire weekend with him? And you can do your homework Friday night."
Her logic was sickening. Literally.
"Go tell him you can come! I'll help you pack!"
I sighed. No getting out of it now.
I texted Sam, and his reply came within seconds.
Sam: That's great! We'll pick you up tmrw @ 7 am. I can't wait!
April: Ok! C u then!
With a sigh, I trudged upstairs after the woman who calls herself my mother and makes me go on camping trips to swim with people I barely know.
It's going to be a long Labor Day weekend.
