ARGYROS' ARCHIVE #31: Getting Dramatic
MEG: Hello, hello, I'm Meg Argyros, and this is my life's archive. Today, I want to talk about the audition and callback process I went through this week for A Midsummer Night's Dream. Let's jump right in, shall we?
So like, ever since it was announced that my school would be doing Midsummer, I got really excited, and did all this research about the play, right? I knew, without a doubt, that this was the year I was going to get the role I auditioned for. Like, I've been auditioning for plays since I was in the junior school and I've never EVER gotten anything larger than a featured role. I auditioned for Titania— and for anyone who doesn't know A Midsummer Night's Dream-- she's the queen of the fairies. So auditions!
The day of auditions, I'm looking great, and I put on this bold makeup to be like 'yes hello I am a queen'. And Vi's there, running auditions like a champ. I signed in with her, and I looked to see who was before and after me. Of course Aurora was in front of me, but little Rapunzel was after me. Remember Rapunzel? I rescued her from that party last week? So after snooping the list and telling Vi she's doing a great job, I looked around for a place to squat before I had to go inside and do my thing. Aladdin was sitting next to Eric and that girl from the party—the one he was making out with. Eric and the girl were wrapped up in a conversation, and Aladdin perked up when he saw me, and waved me over. I decided to be nice and join him. Aladdin asked me how I was doing as I sat down, and Eric and the girl got out of their little trance to acknowledge that I was there. I greeted Eric and he introduced me to the girl: her name's Moana, and dang, we got another pretty girl in the Drama Club. We have too many of them to be honest. She's got this gorgeous dark skin and poofy dark hair and brown eyes and thick eyebrows and later, when she stood up... her. LEGS. I could tell through those leggings that she is TONED. Damn, I'm gay.
Anyway, I chit chat with Eric, Aladdin, and Moana for a little bit, and she seems like she's getting comfortable with all of us, and suddenly, Vi calls out "Aurora Briar, you're on deck," to let Aurora know she was up next to audition. And before this, all the auditioners were walking by us, so of course, Aurora walks by to get near the door.
She starts walking toward us, and smiles all big, and does this little wave, and stops in front of us, and is like "Hey guys! Are we excited?"
I'm resisting the urge to roll my eyes as Eric's like "For sure. I didn't get to perform over the summer, so it's good to be back."
And Aurora's like "Yes! I just know this show is going to be so fun."
And we're all chatting and I'm smiling politely and Aurora makes sure to suck up to Moana to try and get her good graces. I'm not sure if she bought it or not, but whatever. Vi finally calls out "Aurora, you're up. Meg Argyros, you're on deck."
Aurora smiled and Aladdin and Eric told her to 'break a leg', and she pranced away into the audition room. I got up to stand closer to the door, and was planning on staying in my zone, but Aladdin followed behind me. He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the other end of the hallway, and whispered, "Meg, please explain to me why you don't like Aurora."
Can you believe that? This man took me away from my audition routine to ask me THAT? Like, what do you mean 'why don't I like Aurora'? She's so fake; I can't tell what her real personality is. And she's always got makeup on, and her hair is always done, and her nails are always painted, and she's always dressed to the nines... it's ridiculous. But like, I couldn't articulate that in the moment, frustratingly. I was trying to get into the right mindset for my audition, and I was like "Aladdin I don't want to talk about this right now," and he was being pretty persistent, but I told him I'd talk with him about it another time... I may have lied. Definitely lied.
