As Cora lay asleep in the bedroom after several long hours of talking her down, Loki settled down on the couch in the opposite room. He had just made himself a cup of warm tea enjoying the quiet of the tunnels when Thor walked into the room.

"So much for my peaceful night alone." Loki rolled his eyes as his brother plopped down beside him. "How were things back at the hero base?"

"They're still out searching for her." Thor replied, propping his left ankle up on his right knee.

"You've left no trail back to the two of us, correct?"

"As far as Fury is concerned, I'm minding my own business, occasionally helping out when needed. And for you, well, I might have mentioned that you were taken back to Asgard due to an illness. Some rare Asgardian disease."

"You've got to be kidding me." Loki scoffed.

"What? I told them it was contagious. They wouldn't dare think to blame you if you're back home and bed ridden."

Loki rolled his eyes at his brother's attempt at a cover up before taking a long sip of his tea.

"I see you finally got her to fall asleep." Thor commented, gesturing towards Cora's room.

"I had to talk her down for a few hours."

"You know, brother, it's nice to see the side of you when you're with her."

"Don't get used to it." Loki growled in an annoyed tone, setting his cup down heavily on the table. "I'm only doing what needs to be done to get my magic back. If she responds best to kind and comforting, than I'll give it to her as long as I get what I want when this is all over."

"You really are selfish till the end." Thor shook his head in disappointment.

"I'm the god of mischief and lies." Loki replied in snarky tone. "Selfish is what I do best."

Thor retreated to his room as Loki sighed and leaned back against the couch. A little while later, a soft creak in the door alerted the god that he was no longer alone. As he turned towards the sound, he saw Cora standing awkwardly in between her door and the doorframe.

"What are you doing up?" He asked, sitting straight against the cushions.

"I was thirsty. I wanted to get a glass of water."

"Come on out." He nodded, standing up to go towards the sink on the other side of the room. "I'll get you a drink."

"Thank you." Cora said quietly, following him to the sink. "You said Thor went back to S.H.I.E.L.D. earlier. How was everything?"

"A bit chaotic." Loki replied as he handed her the glass full of water and leaned against the counter. "But they're playing it off well."

"They're looking for me, aren't they?"

"Yes they are." He sighed deeply. "But we'll keep you safe."

"I hope so." She whispered unsurely.

"Despite what you may have heard, I am actually quite a loyal ally when I want to be. I have no reason to betray you. Even if you don't believe that right now."

"I need to. At least, as an attempt to get myself through this."

"What happened to you was cruel. S.H.I.E.L.D. should've never gone that far."

"They're terrified of you." Cora replied. "I started working there just after Thor took you back home. I saw the worry Fury had that you would escape and come back here to try again. He was so intent on creating a failsafe. It looks like that's now me."

"You deserve better than being a failsafe."

"What I want is to live my life how I intended, with no S.H.I.E.L.D. involvement."

"How did you get involved?"

"My cousin, Beatrice." Cora sighed. "She works as an agent there and knew I was looking for a job. When they started looking for new lab technicians, she told them I was good with genetic material and the rest was history. I only took the job because it paid for the bills. I really didn't have any other choice. I knew I wasn't going to get another opportunity like that again."

"I'm sorry for what you went through." Loki spoke quietly, his green eyes meeting hers.

"T-thank you." She spoke barely above a whisper. It was strange to hear the infamous god apologize.

"You should probably get some rest." He smiled, stepping closer so that his form seemed to tower over her. "We've got a busy day of training tomorrow."

"Training?" Cora looked up at him with worrisome eyes.

"Don't worry." Loki laughed softly. "I won't work you too hard. We'll just focus on the basics."

She nodded, clutching her water cup in her fingers as she turned towards her room, pausing briefly to turn back around.

"Goodnight, Loki."

"Goodnight, Cora." He replied, watching her slip into her room for the evening.

As she did, he felt a sliver of relief. She was finally warming up to him.

Maybe tomorrow wouldn't be as bad.
