Winter was very tired of country music.
It was always stuck in his head. He didn't even listen to it, but it was always stuck in his head because apparently, his soulmate was addicted to it.
For a while, he'd hoped that it was Moon. When she was studying or reading somewhere on campus, she'd have earbuds in. Till one day, she was showing him how to make a playlist on Spotify (which he knew how to do, it was a very clever plot to find out what kind of music she listened to, so you can stop laughing, Qibli), and he saw an abundance of Heathers and Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen, basically lots of Broadway. No country.
There goes that plan.
So now he was stuck with Maddie and Tae, and a bunch of others.
Now he was nearly seventeen, with still no clue who listened to an abundance of country and happened to be his soulmate.
It was weird: he'd helped plenty of others figure it out. He'd figured out that Kinkajou was the reason that Turtle always had K-POP on his mind, while Kinkajou knew all the lyrics to One Direction (yes, Turtle was heavily teased by her for that). Unfortunately for Winter, Moon was the reason Qibli had all of Dear Evan Hansen memorized without ever having listened to it, and he was why she knew a lot of different songs the OutClaws played in their drum circle. Clay was always humming R&B because of Peril, who was always humming classical.
Winter wondered who had rap consistently stuck in her head.
Until the new girl showed up.
Her name was Lynx. He faintly remembered her from when they were little. They'd gone to the same preschool and had been best friends.
It happened when the Jade Winglet was studying.
Kinkajou was the one who showed Lynx around when she started, and she'd ended up part of their group.
Moon was singing under her breath, and as often happened these days, Qibli absentmindedly joined her. This one, Winter recognized as Yo Girl, one that he'd heard Qibli singing in the mornings and that always terrified him. "Veronica's running on, running on fumes now, Veronica's totally fried, Veronica's gotta be tripping on shrooms now, thinking that she can hide! Veronica's done for, there's no doubt now, notify next of kin, Veronica's trying to keep him out now, too late, he got in."
"What the hell are you singing?" Lynx demanded. "It's creepy!"
"Blame her and her Heathers obsession," Qibli answered without looking up.
"It's creepy."
Moon giggled. "I played that one for my mom. She got goose bumps."
"I don't blame her," Peril added.
"Well, what do you normally listen to?" Turtle asked carefully.
"Mostly country. Maddie and Tae. Brooks and Dunn. Thomas Rhett."
Winter froze. Moon looked up at him, eyes wide. Go talk to her, she mouthed.
No way, he answered.
She glared a little at him, then nudged her boyfriend and whispered in his ear. Qibli blinked and gave her a weird look. Winter started to panic when his best friend grabbed him and Moon grabbed Lynx, dragging them away.
"Do not come back until you have determined what this means," Moon instructed before grabbed Qibli's arm and pulling him back to the others.
Lynx looked up at him. "What what means?"
He blushed bright blue. "Uh... I always have country stuck in my head, but I listen to mostly rap."
Her eyes widened. "I listen to country but have rap stuck in my head."
"I think we can safely say..." He trailed off, a little shy.
"We're soulmates," she finished for him.
"Yeah, that."
"Can we go back now?" she asked. He nodded, and they went back. Qibli gave him a questioning glance, and he held up one finger to say they'd discuss this later.
Because yeah, they'd figured it out. Lynx and Winter were soulmates.
