Time to Say Goodbye

I ran home. It started to rain, but I ignored it. I was hurt. I thought I finally met a man who would love me as much as my dad loved me. My dad passed about a year ago. Me and my younger sister Bethany lived with my mom. Alone. When I walked in the door my mom ran to me. "I was worried about you! Where were you?" She noticed how wet I was and how my makeup was smeared form crying. I didn't answer her. I just walked passed her and went into my room to cry. My phone kept buzzing. Sarah and Rebecca were asking how it went. When the buzzing stopped it was peaceful. I felt alone. It was what I was used to. Loneliness is what I looked forward to when I got home from school. I used to find a spot on the wall until I fell asleep. It's what I did that afternoon. I was awoken by a knocking at my window. I got up and went to see what it was. I opened my window to see the boy I met in the hallway holding flowers. I quickly ran downstairs to him. I grabbed my coat and walked out into the rain. I met him where my window was above our heads. "What are you doing here?" "I Umm heard what the football team did to you. That was pretty messed up." I looked down remembering what had happened that afternoon. "I brought you these," he said as he handed me a bouquet of flowers. "Thank you..?" "Ben." "Ben" I said repeating after him. "I was actually looking for a date to homecoming, Ben." I said. "Oh you were?" He said. "Yeah, would you like to go with me?" "Yes. I mean.. that would be nice," he said trying to sound manly. I stepped forward hugging him. I sniffled. "You really helped make today better, so thank you." He smiled, "you're welcome. See you at school?" I nodded. He turned around and walked away leaving me there in the rain.

The next morning, I finally decided to answer all my friends messages. We all decided to meet up at the mall to find homecoming dresses and talk about what happened.

"So... do you have a date to homecoming?" Sarah asked me when I got in her car. "Yup" I said smiling. Before they could say anything I jumped in saying, "His name is Ben!" "What?" Rebecca said, "I thought for sure Grayson would ask you." "He did, sort of." I explained the whole afternoon to the girls. They seemed very understanding. Though the rest of the way they kept trading glances without saying anything.

When we arrived at the dress store we looked around and sighed. "That's a lot of dresses," I said. We all looked at each other. Moments later we all squealed. All of us grabbed a handful of dresses that stood out to us. We tried them on until we all found the perfect dress. I ended up choosing a short black dress. It had a sheer top with a sweetheart neckline. The skirt was full and fluffy. It seemed perfect. Once all of us were happy we walked back to the car.

Before we got in Sarah and Rebecca stopped me. "We need to talk to you." Rebecca said. "As the captain of the cheer squad I had to make a hard decision. It was either my sport or my best friend." I looked at her confused. She continued, "You're falling behind, Rosie. We were going to keep you if you got with Grayson, but now that you've been friend zoned it's time to say goodbye." I started crying, "You mean.. you're kicking me off the cheer squad because of the guy I'm going to homecoming with?" "Yes," Sarah added. "All the cheer girls go with football players. It just makes sense. You just aren't suitable for those guys. They're too good for you, Rosie." "Can you actually just like leave now. I'm kind of disgusted by the sight of you." Rebecca said. "How am I supposed to get home? You drove me here!" "Figure it out," they said as the got in their car and drove off.

I left my phone at home so I couldn't contact anyone to come get me. I went to a nearby bench and sat down. I cried harder. I put my hands over my face hoping to hide my tears from the people walking around me. I could tell people were watching me. It felt weird to be crying out in the open the way I was. I hoped someone would recognize my bright blonde hair and come talk to me. It felt like hours went by until I finally felt someone come up to sit with me. I felt an arm go around my back. It was warm and I was shaking because I was freezing. Whoever it was hugged me close comforting me. It felt good. I had assumed it was Ben since he was really the only one who cared about how I felt other than my mom. Without opening my eyes I cuddled up under the arm of the person sitting next to me. He cuddled me back. Then, he started to speak. That's when I sat up looking at who was really sitting next to me. "Grayson?"
