Dylan
My eyes are still heavy with sleep as I squint against the bright sun shining through the window. I glance over and realize Lex isn't in bed, I rub my hand over the sheet; cold. I can smell breakfast; bacon, eggs and maybe even a hint of blueberry pancakes. Smiling, I grab my boxers and tug them on. Suddenly, I'm startled when I hear dishes clatter to the floor. I sprint toward the kitchen.
Lex? Is everything alright?"
No answer. That's when I see him. Some guy has Lex pinned against the ice box, a knife to her neck.
"Hey, hey just take it easy buddy. I'm sure whatever it is we can work it out, just put the knife down and let her go."
He looks back at me and stares, his glare is cold and penetrating. Whatever is going on with him, he means business. I try to keep calm to see if I can talk some sense into him.
"Look, I don't know who you are man, just tell me what you want, and I'll try to help you."
There is a look of panic on Lexi's face, but overall, she seems calm. I know how strong willed she is, I can't imagine she would allow this guy to get the best of her. The intruder turns to her and says something.
"He's my fiancé." She says to him.
"Yeah right, how is that possible?" He asks.
"I am, I'm her fiancé and she's carrying my baby."
My admission seems to get his attention. He steps back for a moment and glances from me to Lexi, waving his knife in the air; he looks dumbfounded.
"You're pregnant?... Seriously?
Lexi nods her head, she's trying to keep eye contact with me but seems distracted by the knife in his hand.
"You mean to tell me that you went and got yourself knocked up with this blokes' baby? He says gesturing toward me. Lex just stood there for a moment, bewildered by his shock. While he has his back turned to me, I take a running leap and knock him to the ground. He struggles until I dig my knee into his back.
"Lex call the police."
After the police show up and cart away the intruder; thankfully Lexi isn't hurt, I'm so relieved that I hug her to me tightly. Lexi eventually tells me who the intruder is and why she wasn't all that afraid. Apparently, his name is Logan and he had admitted to stalking her when she started ghosting him. He obviously didn't take being ignored too well. This world is fucked up and I'm apprehensive about bringing a child into it. How is anyone supposed feel safe when predators like Logan are free to roam around?
"Lex? I know this probably isn't the best time but, maybe we should talk about the baby."
"What about the baby?" She asks.
"Well... do you really think we're ready for the responsibility. I mean, this is all heavy shit. I don't make that much money; you don't even have a job."
"Thanks for reminding me and you know I wasn't planning on staying unemployed forever."
"That's not what I meant. I'm just saying that we're going to need help. Daycare can't be cheap, what about things like food and clothes; college even."
"Why are you doing this? You don't think I haven't thought about all of that? No one said this would be easy but, I believe it will be worth it."
"I just... I don't know."
"Are you saying you don't want to be a part of this? She asks.
I can see by the look in her eyes that my indecision on the issue has caused her to become upset. She believes I am all in and I want to be but, I just have this feeling deep down. I feel like, if I knew the baby was for sure mine, I might feel differently.
"No, of course not. I just wish I knew... you know, if the baby is truly mine."
"So, you're saying if you know for sure that it's yours, you're all in? But, if it's not, then what? Are you just going to walk away, act like you never met me?"
"I don't know... I mean, I don't want to leave but, I just don't know how I'm supposed to feel about all of this. This is all new to me and to be honest, I'm freaking out a little.
"And I'm not?" She says, walking to her bedroom, she slams the door shut behind her.
I know that what I've said to her must have stung but, I had to be honest. I can't pretend that I'm good with everything and then find out later that it isn't mine and end up hurting her even more. I decide to wait a few minutes to let her cool down before I talk to her. I lightly tap on the door. No answer.
"Babe, come on, I just want to talk this through."
The door opens, her face is red and wet with tears, she thrusts my clothes at me and shuts the door in my face.
"Are you asking me to leave?"
"You need to think about what you said, and you should do it at your own place. Maybe when you've come to your senses, we can talk."
I'm a little heartbroken that she's kicking me out but, I can't really blame her either. I guess I can understand her position, I just hope she isn't kicking me out for good.
"Will you let me know when you go to the doctors, I would really like to be there to support you."
No answer. I wait a few more minutes. She obviously doesn't want to talk to me right now. I should just give her the space she needs even though I feel like I should stay.
"I love you Lex."
