Two teenagers, very different yet very similar in personality, were both at what one would call "Prom", but what they called "One Crappy Night". Neither of them particularly enjoyed dancing or socializing, but for different reasons.
One of them, the short blonde girl, hated being social because she was a naturally awkward person. Holding a conversation was hard for her, because she was passionate about things others believed were "strange". But in the end, she ignored her instincts, and attempted to be social.
The other, a brunette boy that was not tall, but not short, hated being at the dance because he was just plain anti-social and stoic. Some people believed that he was completely emotionless, but no one knew how much feeling and complexity lie underneath his stone face.
The two were friends, texting occasionally, but both refused to be social often, which blocked off the possibilities for any form of a real relationship.
An 80's song, Come and Get Your Love by Redbone began playing, by the girls request, and she grinned.
The boy heard it, and knew it was the girls favorite. He stood in the corner, resting against a wall. He smirked slightly, which caused a couple passing by to raise their eyebrows.
He glanced at her, running towards him from the middle of the dance floor.
Hey, Hey, what the matter with ya
She stood in front of him and grinned. "You don't have to be stoic in the back forever."
He smiled slightly back, causing even more people to exchange glances. "And you don't have to be awkward."
What the matter, cause you're fine, and you're mine, and you look so divine
The girl outstretched her hand and the boy took it, causing one person in the vicinity to let out an audible gasp. The world seemed to stop as the awkward fangirl and the anti-social young man danced together out into the middle of the dance floor.
People were staring, but the two didn't care, they just danced in front of one another, grinning like idiots.
Come and get your love
The girl danced closer to the guy, and soon the two were doing a little jive in one anothers arms. He would spin her out, and she would spin back into his arms. She shimmied to the left, he shimmied to the right.
Come and get your love
She spun around, he picked her up and spun her, because he felt less anti-social and annoyed with her close.
Come and get your love
The crowd split, everyone staring at the two outcasts in the middle, having the time of their lives.
The song continued, and the two began to enjoy themselves even more. Every dance move made them feel more free, and they didn't feel strange anymore. They felt accepted, each silly dance giving them more hope, more feeling. Maybe even for each other.
La la la la la la la la la la la Oooh
The two fell into each other's arms, the song coming to a close. Applause erupted from their peers, breaking them from their trance. They realized how many people were watching the two wallflowers act like idiots in the middle of the prom.
They returned their gazes to one another, completely out of breath. The girl abruptly realized how close the boy was holding her. The boy suddenly realized that he was holding the girl incredibly close.
Both realized that they liked it.
The two strange teens leaned in, and their lips met for the first time, causing for a firework to explode in their hearts.
The applause and music became just a dull noise made by mere people, and nothing mattered in the world to those teens more than each other.
For once in their life, they had found someplace where they felt welcome, accepted even.
And that was in each other's arms.
