"Oh, Nick!" The brunette squealed. She grabbed hold of my arm, tugging. "Nick, you know we were meant to be. Please come back!"
I turned to the brunette, and smirked a little. "Well, Miss...unmmm...."
She looked up, pleading for me to stay with her eyes. "Madison!" She cried.
I shook my head. "It was a great night, but only a night."
I proceeded to walk away, towards the mall, where I could pick up some more girls. It was so fun, just loving them, then leaving them alone. I must've been through about a million girls. I'd love em, then I'd leave em alone.
I walked into the mall, looking into female department stores, looking for my next victim. My heart stopped as I passed a Game Stop.
There was a girl, a short girl. She had thick blonde hair that was pulled into a high ponytail, and she was wearing a male style Hulk t-shirt. She had skinny jeans, and black high tops, and these piercing blue-green eyes.
Normally, she would not be my type. I preferred the low cut shirts and the hair that flows down the back, but there was something oddly compelling about her.
She was playing Portal 2, jumping through portals insanely. She turned to the gamestop employee that stood on the other side of the room, playing with the cashier. "DJ, how much you wanna bet that Portal 3 comes out in the next ten years?" She was trying to keep from laughing, as if this was a huge joke or something.
The cashier, DJ, grinned, and pulled out his wallet. "Oh, that's totally going to happen, but ten years is too long of a wait. You will be a famous screenplay writer by then, and I will have a good quality job at some game design firm. College is almost over for me, my friend. And you're heading off to New York in a few months. We will never be able to keep this bet going." I could hear the sarcasm dripping from his voice.
The blonde laughed a little, now flying through a vent in the game. "Yeah, that's true...Oh crap! It's the part where Wheatley goes evil oh no oh no oh no!"
DJ laughs, and plays with the cashier a bit. "You've played this game at least a hundred times, and you still freak out when Wheatley turns evil."
The blonde girls looked at the screen for a minute, smiling softly. "That's because I love him. He is a character that you fall in love with, but then he betrays you. And sometimes, the fact that he pushes you away, doesn't care any more, even tries to kill you, it really hurts."
The girls last statement seemed to resonate with me. This Wheatley character seemed to be like me, breaking hearts without care.
But for some reason, when she spoke of being heartbroken, it made me want to stay with her, to hold her close. That was weird, I didn't ever feel that.
I strolled into the Gamestop, leaning against a rack of games against the side.
"Hey, gorgeous. What's your name?"
She continued to stare at the screen, but I heard DJ chuckle in the background. I looked over, and he glanced at me, which caused him to laugh even more.
"What?" I snapped, glaring at him now. DJ stopped laughing, and I turned my stare back to the girl.
She paused the game, and turned to me, a playful smile tugging at her lips. "Oh, my name? You most definitely don't need to know my name. I've seen you flirt with over a thousand girls at this mall, Nick. I even knew one pretty well. Remember Patricia?" She paused, and I thought a bit for a second. Had I been with a girl named Patricia?
"Exactly." The girl snapped.
I shrugged a little, playing innocent. "Why can't you just tell me your name? You apparently know mine."
She shook her head. "You broke my friends heart. I would never, in a million years, ever fall for your tricks."
I put my head down, shame creeping through me. I didn't understand why, normally this doesn't matter to me. I didn't care how much they cried, no sir. Their tears left me cold as a stone.
But with her, so angry at me, I felt bad. I wanted to apologize to everyone, even that Madison from a few nights ago.
But the girl didn't believe me. She would never understand.
"Fine. I won't flirt with you, or anything. But please, can I just know your name?"
She smiled slightly. "Aubrey. And that's all you get to know."
She then kissed her xbox remote, and whispered, "See you tomorrow, Wheatley."
She turned to DJ, and waved. "I have to get back. I promised Chloe I would see World War Hulk with her. Goodbye forever, Donovan!"
DJ/Donovan waved. "Goodbye forever!"
---
I had never done this before, but I came into the GameStop everyday. Each time, I had some new reason to be there. It took a lot of hard work and creativity, but I did it for at least a month.
"My Xbox is broken."
"I would like a new phone case."
"I try to turn on the Sims, but it fails for me."
Finally, Donovan took me aside.
"So, you like her. Actually, truly have feelings for her." He stated.
I nodded. "Yeah, it's awful. And she hates me."
Donovan nodded in return, but was also shrugging.
"Yeah."
DJ talked to me a bit that day, beginning to understand that I actually genuinely liked her. But she never seemed to care.
I kept chasing her though. It kept going until about mid August, when she was about to leave for the New York Film University.
In fact, she was at her gate for the flight. I bought myself a gate pass, and ran as fast as I could to her gate.
I had seen this in movies, so maybe it worked.
I ran up to her, holding a bouquet of green flowers with an Xbox controller decoration in the middle. There was a card attached.
Aubrey looked at it, then looked at me. "What is this?" She snapped.
I shrugged. "I'm probably never going to see you again. You're going to meet some producer, and forget all about me. I decided to write down how I felt. It's literally the first time in my life I've ever done this. I wanted to keep that streak going, but I just couldn't. Not with you around. Before you, I had plans to continue breaking hearts. But..."
She stared up at me, finally beginning to get it. This made me smile a little, as I spoke the words I had been dying to say.
"But then I fooled around, and fell in love."
