She sat next to him, the one she loved, as he was sleeping peacefully on the couch.
She did love him, but he would never see it. At least not anymore. And that was why she couldn't have him.
She was ready to tiptoe away, so that he didn't have to say that he heard her leave.
He was so peaceful, but her feelings were stranger now. She knew in her heart that it would never work, because he was strange, so she decided it would be better if she left.
She kissed his forehead, and whispered, "You can have Manhattan. The one we used to share. The one where we were laughing and drunk on just being there."
She giggled through tears.
"And I know, that holding us in place is just fear of what's already changed. Don't worry."
Ever since Taylor, things had been different. "You can have Manhattan. I guess I will settle for the beach."
She sniffled, wiping away the tears. "I will dismiss the memories of when I was one half of two."
She picked up her backpack, and slid it on. She was leaving Manhattan, going back to California. Maybe she could crawl into her childhood bed and cry about it all.
Her story didn't have him anymore, and that hurt. But she had to give him up. She had to.
She walked out quietly, shutting the door. "You can have Manhattan, because I can't have you."
Her tears had stained her face, and she looked down at her plane ticket. She then looked at her handwritten note describing everything.
"I love you, my Brick Wall. Please find someone else."
She shut the door, and rolled up against it, the tears falling even more.
He opened his eyes, and looked at the door longingly. "I love you too."
The two then parted ways, always remembering he love the shared, just on opposite sides of the country.
