I sat up in the tree, a book perched in my hands. I heard the gate on the lycan side of the orphanage open and then came the sound of tearing clothes and howls rang through the air. I took a deep breath, knowing that they could smell me, but they couldn't reach me from my perch high up in the tree. I blinked, knowing that they'd see my blue eyes standing out against the darkness. I looked down and made eye contact with a wolf. I froze, my fingers gripping the branch. His green eyes stared up at me, but I didn't detect the hunger in his eyes. I cocked my head to the side and then he took off.

I turned climbing up the tree higher and higher, until I was sure that I was out of sight. There was a shudder as something rammed into the tree. I held my breath, wrapping my arms and legs around the branch. Another shudder followed as something else hit the tree. I looked down and my eyes widened. There was at least five wolves down below, ramming themselves into the tree in order ot knock it down. I looked around, trying to find someone where to go, but couldn't. The tree was too far to jump to.

I heard a sickening crack as the trunk finally broke, and the tree slowly started to go down.

I held my breath and tried to jump, but another branch hit me, causing me to fall right to the ground. The wind was knocked right from my lungs and I took a deep breath. I looked around, and at first, I didn't see anything beyond the branches that laid over me, but then I heard the sound of twigs snapping under someone's feet, or rather paws. I held my breath, but knew that it was of no use. They could smell my fear and I saw the paws as they slowly approached me. I tightened the strap of my bag over my shoulder and tried to silently move my legs, but my right leg wouldn't move. I looked down and cursed myself. It was caught under a tree branch and I tried to pull it, but it wouldn't budge.

My heart raced in my chest, and I tried pulling harder, but it was no use. The branches started to snap as the wolves started to walk onto them. I knew they were getting closer and I closed my eyes tightly as a wolf paw stepped down by my head. I started to whimper and I heard a loud growl. The paw disappeared in a blink of an eye and then there was the sound of bodies hitting a tree trunk. I took a deep breath and pushed myself up, but my leg was still stuck. There was yelping and snarling and I closed my eyes tightly.

The noises stopped and something came closer to me. I saw a snout as it bit down on a branch and it pulled and dragged the tree, until I could get up. I stood up, nearly falling over. A dark grey wolf approached me, its green eyes staring at me blankly. I stepped back, waiting for it to attack me, but it didn't. It sat down and stared at me, cocking its head to the side. I heard a howl in the distance and I looked around. "Thank you," I said as I started to run back towards the school.

With my leg hurting as much as it did, I was unable to speed run through the trees. I heard a twig crack and I froze, slowly turning around to look for the cause of the noise. The grey wolf was walking behind me and I dropped my hand off of the tree trunk. I sighed heavily.

"Are you following me?" I asked. The wolf blinked a few times at me and continued to walk by me, as if he were leading the way. I sighed heavily following him. He stopped and looked left and right. He turned around to look at me and gestured his head towards his back. I shook my head.

"I'm not getting on your back," I said. I could hear the far off sound of the wolves getting closer and quickly climbed on his back. He ran quickly, the cold wind whooshing over me like ice water, giving me chills down my spine. I leaned down into his fur. It smelled like burning metal and wood shavings. He suddenly stopped and I sat up to see that he had gotten me back to the fence. I set my feet down on the ground and hurried towards the fence. I turned around and looked back at the grey wolf. He sat down and kept looking from me to the top of the fence. I walked over to him and knelt down beside him, staring into his green eyes. "Thank you...whoever you are." I turned around and jogged back to the fence.

I gripped it tightly and pulled myself up, slowly getting to the top. My converses weren't much help, but then the wolf pushed me up with his foot, getting me up at least three feet. I swung my legs over the fence and jumped down to the ground. I looked back, but the wolf was already gone. I hurried off towards the orphanage and I froze when I heard the voice of the Headmaster, "You know better than to be out here at night, Alice." I froze and started to play with the strap of my bag.

"I was just on my way back..."

"Sure looked like it. Detention for two weeks. You may be special, Alice, but you aren't going to get away with every little thing anymore. Now get to bed. That's an order." I nodded my head and walked by him with my head down in shame. I went off to a bedroom that I wound up sharing by myself, because I was still on the, "Considered A Danger," list. I locked the door behind me and kicked off my boots. I tossed aside my leather jacket and black hoodie over my desk chair.

I climbed under the itchy covers and slowly drifted off to a dreamless sleep.
