"What did you think?" She asked him as they walked hand in hand, hoping her efforts at a nice night out went as well as she thought it had.
He looked to his left, where he gazed into the eyes of the love of his life. "It was perfect," he smiled.
The truth was that all day, despite his best efforts, he couldn't shake off the growing sensation of something inevitably bad happening. And that thought had consumed him so much that he had been distracted from the real reason of going out in the first place.
"A-are you sure? You look like you're faking it to make me happy and if that's the case then - "
He cut her off by cupping her face with his free hand and planting a kiss on her soft, heavenly lips. He felt her smile into it, and in that moment, the sinking feeling in his stomach went away entirely. Well, for the most part.
When they separated he spoke first. "It was amazing, alright? I had a great time."
"Then why did you seem like you were so preoccupied?" She hated to ask, but the question had been gnawing at her all day.
He tightened his grip on her hand as they crossed the street. "Truthfully?" he asked.
"Truthfully."
"I'm scared that I'm going to lose you."
She remained silent for a moment before breaking out into a laugh. "Lose me?"
He bit his lower lip in an attempt to suppress a frown. "I'm serious Brooklyn."
Her laughter died quickly. "Alright. Well, how about we call an early night? Head back home and reschedule the rest for another time?"
Even though he wanted to decline and insist that they continue with their day out, he found himself nodding in response, watching the vibrancy fade out of her eyes.
"Alright," she said softly.
"I'm sorry. Something just feels...off."
"It's okay. I can't be mad at you for wanting to keep me safe...as much as I want to be," she playfully added.
It began to lightly rain as they made their way to the car parked back on 5th avenue, where they had started their day with breakfast at Lucy's. From there they had enjoyed a day around town, stopping at little shops that otherwise went unnoticed by the permanent residents of the town. Their lunch had been spent at a park that overlooked the crowded streets of people walking leisurely around, freely enjoying their day to the fullest extent.
The rain came down harder as they got into the car. "Rain came fast," he remarked.
Brooklyn remained silent and stared out the window. He casted a glance at her before sighing and placing his hand lightly on top of hers. "It's raining anyways."
"Yeah, I see that." She snapped. She paused before adding "Sorry, Carter, I'm just..a little frustrated."
He began to pull out of the parking spot and slowly drive down the road. "I'm sorry," he said exasperatedly. "It's just I have this-"
"Feeling - you said that."
He gritted his teeth and tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
After feeling bad for being short, Brooklyn sighed and drummed her knuckles on the window. "Sorry. I get it, you're worried. That's not something to be mad over."
As always, he was amazed by how easily she forgave people. Not just him, but everyone. And he had the audacity to make her feel like she did something wrong when all she did was express how she felt.
