Elevator

I've worked more than 16 hour days for 2 years now. All my secretaries have quit within a week but Deun has been with me for 6 months and is holding strong - or so I think.

"Eighteenth floor, please," I sigh to Deun. She rushes to click the "Up" button with my coffee and schedule in her arms.

I snatched the schedule and coffee in a swift demeanor to relieve her from the weight and also because I know she'd be the type of person to drop my coffee on my schedule. 2 things that I can't live without.

"I like this blue on you Doc." Deun said with a light smile.

"Hmm" I responded.

The doors to the elevator opens and as I look up, I lock eyes with the man standing right in the center of the elevator. He was wearing an all black suit with his hair slicked back. He wore small hoop earrings with a snake brooch on his upper left chest. Both of his hands sat in his pant pocket and his cheekbones were highlighted by the iridescent light in the elevator. A chain necklace dropped from his neck and his watch shined from the reflection of the light. I could feel his eyes staring deep inside me. Neither of us blinked or flinched.

Deun slides in as the door begins to shut and as the doors reopen she coughs slyly and said, "Doc, are you getting in?"

I walked straight into the elevator and held my stare. Something about losing, especially to this man didn't sit well with me. After getting in and being only an arms reach away, I turned and rolled my eyes. I'm not sure what pissed me off. I don't know whether it was because the man and his 2 guards were terrorizing the whole elevator, because he wouldn't stop staring at me or because he was also heading to the 18th floor.

I handed my schedule back to Deun even though I didn't read it yet. At this point I was extremely tired and flustered. My checks were burning.

As we reached the 7th floor, a loud beep fills the air. "Attention, there will be a slight delay in the elevators due to a potential maintenance error. Please stand by for about 5 minutes."

I let out a breath of air from my nostrils because of the inconvenience but then I began to lose my balance. I held onto the door of the elevator and held the position to regain myself. Everything began to get blurry but I was able to collect myself after a few blinks. I held onto my abdomen as it began to cramp. I squint for a moment to suppress the pain making sure that no one saw my face.

Deun rushes to help me stand straight. "Doc, I think you should really get some rest. You always send me home around 4 pm but I know you work until past midnight and come back to work at 6 am everyday." Deun nagged in my ear. She continues, "You shouldn't push yourself so much. I know you're passionate about your job and your patients but —"

"Are you my secretary or my mom?" I said with no energy as I slowly rotated my head toward Deun.

She clears her throat, "Should I confirm your schedule with you right now?"

"Hmm," I whimpered.

"From 6 am - 7 am you have a meeting with Dr. Edward. From 7:30 am to 12 pm you have a seminar to attend. From 12:30 to 4 pm you have to make your rounds to check on your patients. From 5 pm to 8 pm you have a lecture to teach. From 8:30 to 10 pm you have a Skype meeting with the board. That's all that I have for you today."

"Please add to my schedule from 10 pm to whenever that I'll also be working on my manuscript and patient documents."

"I think you should be more concerned about when you're going to have your meals!" Deun said in disbelief. "You are having signs of gastric stomach ulcers and having irregular meals aren't helping. You're crazy."

"My name isn't Safia if I can't even do this," I smirked.

The elevator began to finally move and the 18th floor opens. My heeled clicked on the floor and Deun's footsteps quickly followed. I waited to hear the man's foot steps but it was silent. I slightly looked over my right shoulder to see that he was standing right outside the elevator, staring at my direction.

I turned around quickly hoping that he didn't see my attempt of wanting to know his whereabouts. I flip my hair back to behind my shoulder and strutted to my meeting.

I shook off the curiosity and hoped to not see this man again.
