Officer Lake opened the door to his patrol car, helping Sam out. As he was about to pick her up to carry her, Sam looked up at him with her big, brown eyes. Goosebumps covered her thin arms. Her teeth chattered and the expression on her face hoped he'd give her something to keep warm in.

"May I have a coat?" She asked politely, through chattering teeth.

Officer Lake nodded, and walked to the back of his cruiser. He popped the trunk and grabbed a California State Police jacket he always kept on him. He threw it over Sam's shoulders, and Sam gave him that same expression she had gave him when he had opened the patrol car door.

"What is it?" He asked her, a sad smile on his face.

"I don't need help walking," Sam said. She didn't want to be seen as a stereotypical weak young woman. However, she struggled to push herself up off the seat and get herself in a stable position to walk. So, Officer Lake eventually started to help her into a standing position.

"Okay," he said, watching as her as she attempted to limp her way to the front of the hospital.

The big, bleach-colored lights from the hospital juxtaposed the darkness of the early California morning. It was a sight Sam had never seen before, and it was intimidating.

As she limped, she stared at the bright lights that illuminated from the hospital windows. She stumbled a couple times, and eventually, Officer Lake came to her aid and carried her bridal style into the hospital.

"We have a girl with a broken foot that is the sister of the young man who came in on the ambulance in shock and paralyzation," Officer Lake shouted out to the nurses and other staff at the front desk.

"Down this hall!" one of the nurses said, pushing the large hospital doors open, opening up the entrance to the emergency section of the hospital.

"Thanks," Officer Lake said, nodding to the nurse.

It was so strange to how when they were getting out of the patrol car, it was if Officer Lake was in no rush at all to get Sam to the emergency until her brother was in, or even into the hospital all.

There was something about Officer Lake that was off to Sam, but she wasn't entirely sure what it was.

~

Deep in Officer Lake's heart, he himself knew that there was more than the criteria of his job that drove him to take care of Sam. When he first saw the helplessness in her eyes, he knew he didn't want to let her go. She was beautiful in his eyes, and he wanted to do everything to make sure she'd be safe, while still getting his job done.

He knew at this point it could be risky to show affection towards a victim that could possibly be the suspect, but something in his heart told him there was no way that this girl could possibly have been the killer. She was clean of any possible evidence, as far as he could tell, and her demeanor was too juxtaposing to one of a criminal.

(A/N: Thank you all for reading this far into the story. I'm not entirely sure where the climax of this story is actually ending, but I think that the sudden feelings Officer Lake might have for Sam could make a good ending to this story, and open up the floodgates to a possible sequel where he does everything in his power to convict Pomegranate and Kyle to a jail sentence and release some of the pain in Sam's chest in order to win her over somehow. Please let me know what you think of this idea. I may or may not come back and edit out the whole attraction to Sam. It all depends on how I actually end this story and if it gets positive feedback)

Thank you,
