"MUM, DAD, WAIT DON'T-DON'T GO. DON'T LEAVE ME!"

"We're sorry, please take care of your little sister." The screams grew closer and closer, my parents looked behind us hurriedly. My mom turned to face us and gave me a chaste kiss on my forehead. "We will always love you, my little baby boy."

"Eijiro my boy, protect your sister, don't be a coward you have to be manly."

"No wait-" I was pushed back into my room as they locked it behind them. "No...don't go-" I brought my face to the window only to see hell.

"MOOOOOM! DAAAD!"

I shot up from my bed, sweating and panting, the nightmares were not uncommon for me to have, especially about that horrible and life-altering night; the day I was forced to grow up.

Ten years ago, my family and my entire colony were attacked by mer-hunters. Mer-hunters are humans; that attack creatures like us and sell our scales and fins for high prices, the shinier, the better. That is why they attacked our village, we were full of fish with pretty scales known to be the only tribe with so many people with rare scales and fins, my mom and dad were on the remarkable scale in varieties.

On that day, everyone was dragged out of the sea by force; it was horrible. Screams and cries heard from children as they watched their parents be pierced in the heart in front of them, or parents crying as they saw their children being dragged off soon to follow. My parents were a part of it. I witnessed them get harpooned right in front of me while they were protecting my little sister and me. I hid in my secret compartment that was located underneath my bed so the mer-hunters couldn't find me before they passed, my mom and dad entrusted Marina to me. On their last breath, they told me to take care of her and said to me that they will always love and protect us. Most importantly, my dad told me to be manly and not to be a coward like he was. I didn't understand what he meant, but that is what I did and how I lived my life.

At that time, my sister wasn't born, yet she was still an egg. That was something I was glad about; she didn't have to see and experience what had happened. She didn't have to live through that, she couldn't. I don't think she would have been able to cope.

Probably from lack of parental contact, it took my sister five whole years to hatch. I gave up after the first thinking I had lost another family member. I cried and wept all night. I thought I had broken my parent's dying promise to keep her safe. I didn't protect her, I couldn't save her, those thoughts plagued my mind for all those years. I felt like a barnacle, unwanted and useless in the sea. I was an awful brother.

Even so, something urged me to keep the egg and I did just that, a few days after my lonely thirteenth birthday the egg began to crack. It's quite funny how much I had panicked thinking that the already dead egg was dying or I had accidentally broken it. Though something changed all of that, it changed my whole world around. It was the small wails coming from inside the tiny egg, my sister was alive. I had already accepted the fact she was gone, and I was going to spend my whole life alone, but she had still been alive inside that egg for 5 years. Even now, I didn't know the reason why, but I was happy, and she was perfect. Her long tail was a gorgeous pink, though, a darker pink than most; unlike mine that was red. Her hair was a reflection of her tail's colour. Her eyes were red just like mine, which I was pleased about. Her elegant fins were transparent, making her tail even prettier. Once I got sight of her I knew that a lot of mer-hunters would be after her if her existence was known to them, so I had to protect her, I would keep my parent's promise. I named her Marina, why? Well, I don't really know, but when I saw her, that was the name that came to mind, and it fitted so well that I couldn't ignore it.
