Newt and Tina walked quietly through the night along the ridge of the large pond. Their hands occasionally brushed up against each other which sent color pouring into both of their faces.
"Thanks Newt," Tina interrupted the silence. They stopped walking and stared across the pond which was glowing shades of blue, green, and purple from the bioluminescent creatures within.
"For what?" Newt looked over. Her face was illuminated by the water.
"Bringing me here, introducing me," she answered staring at the water. The silence thickly settled upon them again. Mustering up all of the courage he could, Newt took her hand in his. The warmth and softness tugged at previously unrecognized strings within his chest. He could've swore he heard her let out a small contented sigh as they looked across the pond.
"Newt, why have you been so quiet?" she whispered cautiously, chancing a glance at him.
"Oh sorry, it's just...I've just, been thinking. A lot," he said.
"Oh," Tina replied. Suddenly, Newt let go of her hand and knelt down to the water's surface. He rolled up his sleeves and cupped his hands. Newt drew out a blue glowing lotus which floated in the small pool of water within his hands. Despite the chilly air of December, the water was lukewarm.
"Here," he said, tipping the lotus into Tina's palms. "Don't let the water spill or the flower will stop glowing." She looked down at the small flower, admiring it.
"It's beautiful," she breathed.
"Yes, very," Newt whispered. Tina looked up to find him staring at her. He looked down quickly, his blush was obscured by the surrounding night. "Here," he said, pointing his wand toward the flower. Its petals floated off and spun themselves into smaller glowing flowers. They floated into her hair, settling between loose, fresh waves. Newt looked up from under his fringe and brought his hand up to tuck some hair behind her ear. Just before he did though, his hand froze. It hovered uncertainly in the air. I can't do this? What if she doesn't want this? I'm misreading the situation, she said she loved someone when I walked into the apartment... He was snapped out of his thoughts by a gentle hand on top of his.
"It's okay, go ahead," she whispered, reading the hesitance in his eyes. Tina drew his hand to her cheek and held it there. Newt gently let his thumb stroke the smooth skin stretched across her cheekbone. Tina's eyes fluttered shut under his touch. Newt intently watched his thumb, too scared to watch her. An unwarranted tear slipped down his freckled cheek. And then another.
"Newt?" Tina voiced confusedly. She brought her other hand up to thumb the tears away.
"It's so hard," his voice wobbled and cracked.
"What?" Tina asked concernedly, worry and pain etched into every line of her face. Then, Newt did the unexpected. He threw his arms around her, pulling her close. Tina was shocked, but quickly relaxed into the embrace. He held her strongly, burying his face in her neck. His tears wetted her skin, his shoulders racked with silent sobs. "Oh Newt, what's wrong?" she asked, soothingly, stroking his copper curls. She butted his forehead with her own, trying make him look up. "Look at me," she whispered, "please." He did, his eyes glassy and red. "Tell me what's going on," she pleaded.
"I can't," he croaked.
"Why not?" she asked gently, wiping his eyes with the back of her hand.
"Because I'm afraid," he admitted.
"Afraid?" Tina cocked an eyebrow, "I'm standing in front of the man who had a one-on-one face off with Grindelwald, who carries around creatures with fangs and talons, and he's telling me he's afraid. What could possibly be so scary?"
"You," he said. Tina drew back in surprise.
"I'm scaring you?" she asked, hurt trickling into her voice.
"No, no, you're not," Newt stuttered, "It's just...I'm...I'm...I can't...if...I love you." Tina's eyes widened as she tried to interpret the words that had just come out of his mouth. No matter how she rearranged them in her head they meant the same thing. Newt stepped
back when he realized what he had just said. "I'm so sorry," he whispered before Disapparating."NEWT!" Tina yelled.
