I was startled awake by my damn alarm clock. 5:00 am. I looked outside and it was so dark I was sure the sun would never rise. Karasu and Yohei's alarm clock were going off as well. They quickly got out of bed, since I'm sure the last people to arrive at roll call would be punished, but the strange thing was they didn't look tired at all. As soon as I sat up I just wanted to collapse back into my bed. The worst part is that I'm going to have to wake up to my damn annoying alarm clock every morning for the rest of my life.
"Come on lazy ass, get out of bed!" Karasu called to me. He and Yohei were already near the door. "If you're late, the soldiers will punish not only you, but us too! Now hurry up!"
I got out of bed as fast as I could, which as you could imagine wasn't fast at all, and Yohei and Karasu were impatiently waiting at the door. Once I got myself to my feet, they ran outside and I hurriedly followed them, along with the rest of the trainees. Our roll call lines were separated by which building number we were in. Each building held around twenty people. Our rooms were in building number six, so we looked for a post-sign with the number six on it. Karasu and Yohei were in front of the line, so I followed them and quickly stood next to them instead of standing next to seventeen other strangers. Once all the trainees were lined up in their correct lines, each were introduced to their, I guess you can call it "counselor" And guess what? The weird soldier in charge guy was the counselor of building six. What damn luck I'd be stuck with this crazy son-of-a-bitch. My life just got a whole lot worse.
The weird guy introduced himself as Captain Fukuro. How this guy came to be a captain was beyond me. Throughout his entire introduction, he was eyeing me with a strange smile on his face. Why does this creep have an interest in me? God, I don't think I want to know. After his introduction, he handed out our uniform that weren't very fashionable. They were a standard faded gray camouflage uniform made of some cheap silk. I looked at Fukuro's uniform, and his was a brighter gray that was made of cotton and looked very comfortable, and it lit up his eyes. He also had some stars across both of his shoulders and some pendants on his left side of his chest. He told us to change into them immediately, which was very uncomfortable stripping in front of twenty guys. After that, he began teaching us our warm-up drills.
Our warm-up drill was basically fifty pushups, fifty sit-ups and three laps around the entire barracks. But, since it was our first day, he doubled everything. What a nice guy! It took us two and a half hours to finish our warm-up drill, and boy, I was so tired I couldn't stand up. Doing a hundred pushups, sit-ups, and six laps around the barracks really took a lot out of me. I don't think I've worked so hard in my life. The other twenty guys were down on their knees as well. If that was only a warm-up, I was scared to see what our regular drills to be like. We were all already exhausted, and I was certain our legs would pop off before the day even ended.
"What the hell do you think you wimps are doing groveling on the ground like that? Come on ladies, stand up!" Fukuro called to us. One by one, we slowly got on our feet. "Come on, we don't have all day!" We increased our speed of recovery a little bit. Fukuro walked to the other end of the line and I could hear him yelling at somebody. "I told you to stand up, idiot!" I heard Yohei's voice whimper in pain.
I hurried to my feet and staggered to the other end of the line. Yohei was lying on the ground while Fukuro was constantly kicking and yelling at him. "I told you to stand up, wimp! Girls like you won't be able to survive on the battlefield if you can't handle something as simple as that warm-up!" He stomped on Yohei's stomach as he yelped. The anger inside me tore me apart.
"Hey!" I yelled as I ran to Yohei and pushed Fukuro away. "Kicking him won't help anything! You honestly think injuring him will increase his chances of standing up? What the hell is wrong with you hurting this poor guy like that?" Captain Fukuro stared at me with the same strange smile on his face.
