General Attakai’s statement still whirled around in my head. “If you make one mistake… that one could be your last.” Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap. It would probably take three days and two nights to reach the colony, which gives me two nights of hell dealing with demons. What fun.
I tried to chase those lingering thoughts out of my head. “Hey Hanako.” I said as I walked toward the door so she could hear me. “What exactly do you need to go there for anyways? That family matter thing?”
“It’s not exactly a family matter.” Hanako’s voice echoed. “They’re close friends of my dad that we consider as family. They’ve been in a panic since they’ve spotted demons patrolling around the colony lately, keeping close eyes on the villagers. I’m there to help calm them down.”
“That sounds like a tough job.”
“It’s actually boring. I have to do this once or twice every two or three years.”
“How many times have you done this?”
“Probably seven years ago was my first time. My dad is always extremely busy trying to head an entire army, so I pick up little tasks like these.”
“The demons have been patrolling the village for seven years?”
“I guess so, yeah. They haven’t done anything though besides freak the villagers out.”
“They could be plotting something…” I murmured to myself. “To guard a village for seven years, they have to be planning something big. The colony we’re going to is the one that basically borders Jigoku and their territory. They might be trying to take Jigoku and our land at one time… or maybe separately… if so, which one would they take first? If they took over human territory, they would have an extreme advantage against the other species on Jigoku, but Attakai has to have noticed this already, for seven years to send his daughter out for the same reason. If he had, he would have done something already. Oh, damn, I don’t know!” I rubbed my head viciously.
“I think you over-think things.” I can hear her giggling inside.
“Well I’m “over-thinking” for your own safety.” She replied with another giggle.
“Now look,” I continued with the “safety” talk. “You stay in that carriage and never come out, no matter what you see or hear. You hide on the floor; keep the doors locked, okay?”
“Yes yes, Mr. Safety-Man. This isn’t my first time. All my other escorts have told me the same thing, but nothing has ever happened, so I think I’ll be fine.”
I guess it gave me relief to know that Hanako hasn’t ever been hurt on this job, and it also gave me some hope that I’d be as lucky as the other escorts and I won’t get attacked either. Oh please, please!
The sun was beginning to set as we had just begun our journey through the rocky, rugged mountains. I was able to spot an opening off to the side of the trail, and suggested we rest there for tonight. They agreed, so I led the carriage behind some rocks where it wouldn’t be spotted easily from the road. Even with the carriage, there was still a lot of room in the opening. The walls stretched high into the air, like cliffs looking down on us, either to attack us or protect us.
I sat on a low rock facing towards the carriage, and rested my gun against my shoulder. The driver just finished setting up his small tent, hiding behind the carriage. There were dark purple drapes covering the windows of the coach, and the locks on the door handles were locked. She does know what she’s doing, but sucks for me is I have to stay up all night, and I was exhausted enough from walking all the way here, and I have to endure two more days, but I’m sure the other solo missions are even more tough the higher your rank increases. This mission has to be worth it. I finally won’t be a stupid newbie recruit anymore. I can be a private. It’s still low, but maybe I can rub it in Mao’s face and he probably won’t be able to get rough on me anymore since I would probably have the authority to punish him, make him give me a message, hand me glasses of lemonade, and fan me. Oh, revenge has never smelled sweeter. Don’t give me that look. That jerk deserves it.
